Some results on picture languages

Pattern Recognition, 1999
Two different types of models called puzzle languages and recognizable picture languages describing digitized pictures in a two-dimensional plane have been introduced in the 1990s. We review here these models, reporting the main results already proved. We also give a few new results.

Stochastic languages for picture analysis

Computer Graphics and Image Processing, 1973
The concept of stochastic languages is introduced and major results are briefly reviewed. The use of stochastic languages for the description of noisy (ambiguous) pictorial patterns is demonstrated. A procedure for the estimation of production probabilities of a stochastic context-free language from sample strings is presented.

Picture Languages Generated by Assembling Tiles

Fundamenta Informaticae, 2009
We propose a new formalism for generating picture languages based on an assembly mechanism of tiles that uses rules having a context and a replacement site. More precisely, a picture language will be generated from a finite set of initial pictures by iteratively applying rewriting rules from a given finite set of rules, called a tiling rule system ...

On some recognizable picture-languages

1998
We show that the language of pictures over {a, b}, where all occurring b's are connected is recognizable, which solves an open problem in [Mat98]. We generalize the used construction to show that monocausal deterministically recognizable picture languages are recognizable, which is surprisingly nontrivial.

P Systems and Picture Languages

2007
Array-rewriting P systems were introduced in [2] linking the two areas of membrane computing and picture grammars. Subsequently a variety of P systems with array objects and different kinds of rewriting has been introduced. Here we discuss a few prominent systems among these, point out their features and indicate possible problems for future study.

The Language of Pictures

Abstract This chapter examines the Renaissance interest in hieroglyphics, and connects this interest to Philip Pullman’s creation of the dæmon. Knowledge of ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics, a writing system that had endured for millennia, was lost during the late Roman empire.

Local picture languages

Computer Graphics and Image Processing, 1981
Abstract Picture languages are called local if local scanning suffices for recognition. In this paper, cellular automata, which accept in size-independent time, are used for recognition. Cellular automaton algorithms are given which precisely classify one-dimensional local languages.

5. Picture language

2018
For centuries, images were regarded as inferior to language and seen as an embellishment or decoration, despite their undoubted power to transmit information. This held back the development of graphical presentations of data, because numbers in tables were seen as more trustworthy.
