A simple and robust method to design a modified PID controller with good regulating and tracking characteristics is presented. Only two limit cycle measurements of the plant under relay control are required to design the modified PID controller. The design method has shown to work well in a number of simulations of industrial applications.

On a Class of Adaptive PID Regulators

Abstract Based on some relations discovered between the deterministic servo regulator and the PID design a simple design role is presented for stable processes to ensure 5% relative overshoot for the closed loop step response. The adaptive solution is based on the explicit identification of a second order process model with time delay.
