Posthypoxic Hypothermia in Newborn Piglets [PDF]

open access: yesPediatric Research, 1997
The purpose of this study was to determine whether mild hypothermia after a moderate hypoxic-ischemic insult reduces the extent of brain damage. Hypoxia was achieved in newborn piglets (n = 24; age, 14-72 h) by abrupt reduction of the inspired oxygen concentration (FiO2) to the maximum concentration (approximately 6%) giving low amplitude (< 7.0 microV)

Characterization of an Injectable Poly(vinyl alcohol)‐gelatin Hydrogel for Growth Factor Delivery in an Orthopedic Application

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
This work introduces photo‐crosslinkable tyraminated poly(vinyl alcohol)‐gelatin (PVA‐GT) hydrogels as tunable injectable platforms for tissue engineering and growth factor delivery applications. This schematic illustrates the two developed hydrogel formulations and the experimental workflow used to evaluate their physico‐chemical properties in vitro ...

Predicting piglet survival until weaning using birth weight and within-litter birth weight variation as easily measured proxy predictors

open access: yesAnimal
Individual piglet birth weight (BW0) and within-litter birth weight variability (BWvar) strongly affect preweaning survival. Piglet mortality in commercial pig operations poses significant economic and ethical concerns, as well as animal welfare ...

The Familial Grotesque in the Poetry of Shirley Geok-lin Lim [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Framing the representation of the family in Shirley Lim’s poetry against the concept of the grotesque, this essay aims to demonstrate how the aesthetic category is arguably enlisted as a symbol referring to the trope – or more accurately, with ...

A Personalized, 3D Printed Polymeric Device for the Prevention of Post‐Myocardial Infarction Cardiac Remodeling

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Myocardial infarction often leads to pathological remodelling and ventricular dilatation, key features of HFrEF. This study introduces a personalized, 3D‐printed cardiac restraint device (CARD) printed using rationally designed inks displaying the requested printability and mechanical properties.

Newborn piglet model for campylobacteriosis [PDF]

open access: yesInfection and Immunity, 1993
An in vivo model system for human campylobacteriosis has been developed in which colostrum-deprived newborn piglets are orally challenged with an invasive strain of Campylobacter jejuni. Piglets developed clinical symptoms and histopathological lesions similar to those observed in humans infected with C. jejuni.

Nanotherapies for Atherosclerosis: Targeting, Catalysis, and Energy Transduction

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Atherosclerosis management is hindered by poor drug targeting and plaque heterogeneity. Nanotechnology overcomes these barriers via three core strategies: (1) target‐engineered nanocarriers that achieve lesion‐specific precision via ligand modification, biomimetic camouflage, stimuli‐responsive release, and self‐propelling nanomotors; (2) catalytic ...

Congenital Fibropapillomatosis in a Piglet [PDF]

open access: yesVeterinary Pathology, 1999
We report a case of congenital fibropapillomatosis in the head and neck of a piglet from a swine breeding farm where sporadic cutaneous papillomas of the prepuce and scrotum had previously occurred in several boars. Histologically, the tumor consisted of multiple exophytic, papillary projections composed of branching, densely cellular, fibrovascular ...

Artificial rearing influences the morphology, permeability and redox state of the gastrointestinal tract of low and normal birth weight piglets [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Background: In this study the physiological implications of artificial rearing were investigated. Low (LBW) and normal birth weight (NBW) piglets were compared as they might react differently to stressors caused by artificial rearing.
