Accounting for animal health in efficiency analysis: An application to Swedish dairy farms

open access: yesAmerican Journal of Agricultural Economics, EarlyView.
Abstract Poor animal health is a central concern in modern livestock production. Despite the necessity to incorporate animal health in efficiency analysis, the theoretical and empirical developments are limited on this subject. This article appropriately characterizes the axiomatic properties of animal health within a production framework.

Quantitative proteomics identifies clusterin as a novel biomarker for atherosclerosis

open access: yesAnimal Models and Experimental Medicine, EarlyView.
This schematic illustrates the proposed mechanism. In advanced atherosclerotic lesions, upregulated CLU on the cell surface activates low‐density lipoprotein (LDL) receptor‐related protein 1 (LRP1). This interaction triggers the phosphorylation and activation of AKT.

Effects of three different designed farrowing crates on neonatal piglets crushing: preliminary study

open access: yesItalian Journal of Animal Science, 2018
In swine production, the economic gain in the farrowing room corresponds to the number of weaned piglets/sow per year. Pre-weaning mortality is at least 11–13% of total losses within one herd, considering a previous 7–8% of the stillbirths.

Behavior and Performance of Suckling Piglets Provided Three Supplemental Heat Sources

open access: yesAnimals, 2020
This study compared water-heated mats (WM) and electric-heated mats (EM) with heat lamps (HL) as supplemental heat sources for suckling piglets. Forty-two litters were studied in 3 trials. In all trials, behavior of piglets was video-recorded on day 1, 3,

Animal models of chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension

open access: yesAnimal Models and Experimental Medicine, EarlyView.
Current animal models of CTEPH. Created using BioRender.com. Abstract Chronic thromboembolic pulmonary hypertension (CTEPH) is a rare, yet life‐threatening disorder characterized by persistent pulmonary vascular obstruction and elevated pulmonary artery pressure, with progressive remodeling and subsequent right heart failure.

Changes in back fat thickness during late gestation predict colostrum yield in sows [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Directing protein and energy sources towards lactation is crucial to optimise milk production in sows but how this influences colostrum yield (CY) remains unknown.

Equine models in translational medicine: A comparative approach to human health

open access: yesAnimal Models and Experimental Medicine, EarlyView.
This diagram summarizes and contrasts rodent and equine models, outlining their strengths, limitations, and applications. Horses offer naturally occurring diseases, genetic and physiological similarities to humans, and suitability for longitudinal and clinical‐scale studies.

Drying and warming immediately after birth may reduce piglet mortality in loose-housed sows

open access: yesAnimal, 2009
The aim of the present experiment was to investigate the effects of placing newborn piglets under the heat lamp or both drying and placing them under the heat lamp on piglet mortality.
