The intensity of peroxide oxidation of lipids in the pigmented epithelium of the eye, under hyperoxic conditions, is approximately 6 times lower in pigmented rabbits as compared to albino ones. In pigmented animals, the pigmented epithelium of the eye exerts evident protective effect during the action of oxygen on the retina.

A study was made of proliferative activity and transdifferentiation of the cells of retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) cultivated in the cavity of the lensectomized eye of adult newt. Implantation of the newt RPE together with vascular membrane and scleral coat resulted in the regeneration of retina.

During development of the eye, invagination of the optic cup gives rise to a double layered neuroepithelium, part of which differentiates into the retinal pigment epithelium (RPE). The molecular mechanisms which control differentiation of the RPE are not known.
