On the genetic basis of pigment pattern diversification in Danio fish
The genetic basis of morphological variation provides a major topic in evolutionary developmental biology. Fish of the genus Danio, which includes the model species zebrafish, Danio rerio, provide a system for studying the diversification of pigment ...

Pigment dispersion syndrome and pigmented pattern dystrophy of retinal pigment epithelium. [PDF]
The 2 rare entities, pigmentary dispersion syndrome and pigmented pattern dystrophy of the retinal pigment epithelium, were found in a young male patient. Visual function was undisturbed.

One of the most successful chromatic adaptations in vertebrates is the dorsal-ventral pigment pattern in which the dorsal skin is darkly colored, whereas the ventrum is light.

Genetics and Evolution of Pigment Patterns in Fish [PDF]
Vertebrate pigment patterns are both beautiful and fascinating. In mammals and birds, pigment patterns are likely to reflect the spatial regulation of melanocyte physiology, via alteration of the colour‐type of the melanin synthesized. In fish, however, pigment patterns predominantly result from positioning of differently coloured chromatophores ...

Studies of pigment transfer between Xenopus laevis melanophores and fibroblasts in vitro and in vivo
Frog melanophores rapidly change colour by dispersion or aggregation of melanosomes. A long-term colour change exists where melanosomes are released from melanophores and transferred to surrounding skin cells.

Colour patterns are a prominent feature of many animals and are of high evolutionary relevance. In zebrafish, the adult pigment pattern comprises alternating stripes of two pigment cell types, melanophores and xanthophores.

MITF maintains genome stability in nonmelanocyte lineages
MITF is essential for melanocyte survival and acts as an oncogene in 10%–20% of melanomas. We show that MITF depletion causes genome instability in nonmelanocytic cells, leading to LATS2‐mediated P53 activation, cell cycle arrest, and apoptosis. This study highlights the role of MITF as a genome maintenance factor beyond the melanocyte lineage. Created
