Coordinated Architectural and Chemical Reinforcement in the Crushing Mandible of a Soldier Termite

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
The crushing mandible of a soldier termite withstands substantial biting loads despite lacking mineral. Its cuticle is partitioned: convex teeth pair hardness and zinc enrichment with aligned chitin fibers for contact durability, while stiffer concave regions between teeth carry bending loads.

Clarifying the Tip Resistance Mechanism of Open-Ended Steel Pipe Piles: A Fundamental Evaluation Under Partially Plugged Conditions

open access: yesGeotechnics
This study aims to investigate the tip resistance mechanism of open-ended steel pipe piles under partially plugged conditions by decomposing the load-sharing contribution of the ring zone and the internal soil core. A virtual static loading test was performed using the two-dimensional discrete element method (2D-DEM).

Modified Sheet Pile Abutments for Low-Volume Road Bridges: TR-568, January 2012 [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
To date there have been few investigations of the substructures in low-volume road (LVR) bridges. Steel sheet piling has the potential to provide an economical alternative to concrete bridge abutments, but it needs investigation with regard to vertical ...

Load Distributing Metamaterials Via Discrete Optimization

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Mechanical metamaterials are computationally optimized to homogenize transmitted forces by minimizing the spread of reaction forces. The resulting architectures transform localized loading into broader, more uniform force distributions and experimentally demonstrate robust load spreading under quasi‐static and impact loading.

Numerical modelling of pile jacking in highly sensitive clays

open access: yesCanadian geotechnical journal (Print)
This paper presents large deformation finite element (FE) modelling of penetration of solid cylindrical piles into highly sensitive soft clay. The simulations are performed using a Coupled Eulerian-Lagrangian (CEL) FE modeling technique.

2D Skeletal Muscle Thin Film Actuators Enhance Efficiency of Biohybrid Robots

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
2D skeletal muscle thin film actuators generate millinewton‐scale forces and millimeter‐scale strokes while remaining functional for over 30 days. Their force density is 20‐fold higher than 3D skeletal muscle actuators, enabling multi‐fin robots with tunable speed and multidirectional steering.

Bearing Characteristics and Negative Skin Friction Preventive Measures for Highway Bridge Pile Foundations in Collapsible Loess Areas Under Water Immersion

open access: yesWater
In collapsible loess sites, large-scale collapsible settlement may occur after water immersion, which will reduce the bearing capacity of existing highway bridge pile foundations and pose serious potential safety hazards.

Microscale Patterning of Ultrahigh‐Viscosity Metallic‐Polymer Composites via Embedded Droplet Writing

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A hybrid additive manufacturing platform integrates direct droplet writing of metallic composite with VAT photopolymerization to fabricate architected soft magnetic composites. This approach enables microscale patterning of high‐viscosity materials for programmable actuators, adaptive fluidic devices, and switchable adhesives, offering tunable ...

Melanin's Role in Balancing Mechanical Strength and Reproductive Output in Environmentally Stressed Fungal Spores

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Melanin content directly controls fungal spore mechanical properties, with pigmented spores achieving rupture forces two orders of magnitude higher than hyaline spores. Environmental stress drives this quantity‐quality tradeoff; stressed species invest energy in melanin‐reinforced, mechanically superior thick‐walled, super‐hydrophobic spores, while ...

Research on Bored Bearing Characteristics in Xi’an

open access: yesMATEC Web of Conferences, 2015
To analyze the influence of different soil properties on pile foundation load-bearing characteristics, taking a section of railway in Xi’an and a bridge of Xi’an as test area, and by field static load test to study load transfer characteristics after the
