P*: A Model of Pilot-Abstractions [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2012
Pilot-Jobs support effective distributed resource utilization, and are arguably one of the most widely-used distributed computing abstractions - as measured by the number and types of applications that use them, as well as the number of production distributed cyberinfrastructures that support them.

Pilot Optimization and Channel Estimation for Multiuser Massive MIMO Systems [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2014
This paper proposes novel pilot optimization and channel estimation algorithm for the downlink multiuser massive multiple input multiple output (MIMO) system with $K$ decentralized single antenna mobile stations (MSs), and time division duplex (TDD) channel estimation which is performed by utilizing $N$ pilot symbols.

Evaluating the use of diagnostic CT with flattening filter free beams for palliative radiotherapy: Dosimetric impact of scanner calibration variability

open access: yesJournal of Applied Clinical Medical Physics, EarlyView.
Abstract Purpose Palliative radiotherapy comprises a significant portion of the radiation treatment workload. Volumetric‐modulated arc therapy (VMAT) improves dose conformity and, in conjunction with flattening filter free (FFF) delivery, can decrease treatment times, both of which are desirable in a population with a high probability of retreatment ...

Random-Training-Assisted Pilot Spoofing Detection and Secure Transmission [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2016
The pilot spoofing attack is considered as an active eavesdropping activity launched by an adversary during the reverse channel training phase. By transmitting the same pilot signal as the legitimate user, the pilot spoofing attack is able to degrade the quality of legitimate transmission and, more severely, facilitate eavesdropping.

The Influence of Surprise on Upset Recovery Performance in Airline Pilots

open access: yes, 2017
Objective: The aim of this study was to test if performance of airline pilots, in performing an aerodynamic stall recovery procedure, decreases when they are surprised, compared to when they anticipate a stall event.

Spatial disorientation cue effects on gaze behaviour in pilots and non-pilots

open access: yesCognition, Technology & Work, 2018
Spatial disorientation (SD) poses a serious threat to flight safety. A pilot’s gaze behaviour that characterizes his/her visual perception and attention determines success in dealing with this phenomenon. Regardless of a pilot’s experience or proficiency,

High- and low-pressure pneumotachometers measure respiration rates accurately in adverse environments [PDF]

open access: yes, 1968
Respiration-rate transducers in the form of pneumotachometers measure respiration rates of pilots operating high performance research aircraft. In each low pressure or high pressure oxygen system a sensor is placed in series with the pilots oxygen supply
