Pilot is a Pilot is a Pilot?: Exploration of Effects of Professional Culture in Helicopter Pilots
2021Culture has been identified as a factor influencing the way people communicate and behave. Though often imperceptible by its members, cross-cultural interactions can lead to misunderstandings and conflicts. Despite ex-military and civilian trained pilots frequently flying together, there has been a lack of research describing each professional sub ...

Superimposed pilots: An alternative pilot structure to mitigate pilot contamination in massive MIMO
2016 IEEE International Conference on Acoustics, Speech and Signal Processing (ICASSP), 2016Superimposed pilots are proposed as an alternative to time-multiplexed pilot and data symbols for mitigating pilot contamination in massive multiple-input multiple-output systems. Provided that the uplink duration is larger than the total number of users in the system, superimposed pilots enable each user to be assigned a unique pilot sequence, thereby

On the dependence of pilot task and pilot workload
AIAA Modeling and Simulation Technologies Conference and Exhibit, 2001In the Introduction a project is described, which deals with the comparison of ground-based simulation and real flight. The project simulators and a particular kind of simulation technique, namely in-flight simulation, will be explained briefly. Three particular pilot tasks are presented.

Identifying the pilot in pilot-induced oscillations [PDF]
Pilot-induced oscillations typically occur as a result of fundamental shortcomings in aircraft flight control system design. Prevention of PIOs will be greatly enhanced if we are able to identify the characteristics of the pilot just before, and during, the PIOs. This paper examines two theories of pilot behavior in PIOs.

They were strong-hearted, incredibly valorous young men. Any pilot who flew into perilous aerial combat in the Great War (as it was known before it became necessary to number them) and lived to tell of his encounters had a valid reason to believe that the gods were on his side.

Pilot see, pilot do: Examining the predictors of pilots’ risk management behaviour
Safety Science, 2010Decision-making under uncertainty, known as risk management, is common in many professions including medicine and the military. Within general aviation, it is a skill that pilots are largely expected to acquire through experience. This study sought to determine if there are known markers (i.e., attitude and risk perception) and or personal ...
