Contributions to the systematic of Pimelodidae (Osteichthyes, Siluriformes): basic and molecular cytogenetics on seven species of Pimelodus from three Brazilian hydrographic systems

open access: yesNeotropical Ichthyology, 2018
Pimelodidae harbors several species and is widely distributed throughout the Neotropical region. Pimelodus is the genus with the largest number of species, however it is a polyphyletic group.

Cytogenetical analyses in three fish species of the genus Pimelodus(Siluriformes: Pimelodidae) from rio São Francisco: considerations about the karyotypical evolution in the genus

open access: yesNeotropical Ichthyology
Karyotypes and other chromosomal markers were investigated in three species of the catfish genus Pimelodus, namely P. fur, P. maculatus and Pimelodus sp., from municipality of Três Marias, Minas Gerais, Brazil, using differential staining techniques (C ...

Food characterization of the spotted pimelodid fish Pimelodus maculatus from a polluted urban river in Argentina [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Tropical Life Science, 2015
On the present study, the nourishment and the digestive system of a population of the spotted pimelodid Pimelodus maculatus Lacepède 1803 from a polluted urban river in Argentina were analyzed (Reconquista River, Buenos Aires province). The specimens are characterized by having benthic habits and an omnivore diet.

Reproductive Dynamics of Iheringichthys labrosus (Lütken, 1874) (Teleostei, Pimelodidae), in the Capivara Reservoir, Paranapanema River, Parana, Brazil

open access: yesDataset Papers in Science, Volume 2013, Issue 1, 2013., 2013
To study the reproductive dynamics of the mandi‐beiçudo, Iheringichthys labrosus, in the Capivara Reservoir, Paranapanema River, Parana, Brazil, specimens were captured trimonthly from March 2001 to July 2004 at four sampling sites. The sex ratio showed a predominance of females in most of months sampled and the larger length classes.

Parasitofauna de Pimelodus maculatus (Osteichthyes: Pimelodidae) do rio Itajaí-Açu em Blumenau, Estado de Santa Catarina, Brasil - DOI: 10.4025/actascibiolsci.v29i1.159

open access: yesActa Scientiarum: Biological Sciences, 2007

Genetic Structure and Conservation Strategies for the Endangered Catfish Steindachneridion melanodermatum (Siluriformes, Pimelodidae) in the Iguaçu River, Brazil

open access: yesAquatic Conservation: Marine and Freshwater Ecosystems, Volume 36, Issue 6, June 2026.
ABSTRACT The endemic catfish Steindachneridion melanodermatum from the Iguaçu River basin, southern Brazil, is one of the most threatened pimelodid species. Comprehension of its genetic structure is imperative to the formulation of long‐term efficacious conservation strategies. A genetic analysis was conducted on three populations from the lower Iguaçu

First Records of Length–Weight Relationships for Ten Fish Species From the Middle Stretch of the Uruguay River, Southern Brazil

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ichthyology, Volume 2026, Issue 1, 2026.
This study estimated the length–weight relationships (LWRs) of 10 fish species from the middle stretch of the Middle Uruguay River basin, aiming to provide new morphometric data and contribute to the knowledge of Neotropical ichthyofauna. Fish were collected at seven sites with sampling conducted at each site during every season, totaling 84 sampling ...

Illuminating the Dark: Using eDNA Metabarcoding to Study the Unique Ichthyofauna of the Furnas Formation Sinkholes

open access: yesEnvironmental DNA, Volume 7, Issue 4, July–August 2025.
Using eDNA metabarcoding, we assessed fish diversity in isolated sinkholes in southern Brazil, uncovering signs of local extinction and species persistence. This approach offers a non‐invasive tool for biodiversity assessment and informs conservation efforts in unique karst environments.

Structural chromosome polymorphism in a Pimelodus maculatus La Cepède, 1803 population (Siluriformes, Pimelodidae) from the Paranapanema River basin, PR, Brazil Polimorfismo cromossômico estrutural em uma população de Pimelodus maculatus La Cèpede, 1803 (Siluriformes, Pimelodidae) da bacia do Rio Paranapanema, PR, Brasil

open access: yesBrazilian Journal of Biology, 2007
In the present cytogenetic study of Pimelodus maculatus, 13 specimens (8 males and 5 females) from the Congonhas Stream in Paraná State, Brazil, were examined using conventional staining.

Low‐Effort eDNA Sampling Reveals Fish Community Patterns in a Neotropical River Basin

open access: yesEnvironmental DNA, Volume 7, Issue 4, July–August 2025.
Low eDNA sampling effort (< 10 sample sites) using a portable on‐site kit with syringe filters and a modest water volume (< 500 mL per site) provided a rapid and robust snapshot of fish biodiversity. Environmental DNA based species richness increases along the upstream‐downstream gradient showing a significant negative correlation with river elevation ...
