FACTORS INFLUENCING RECRUITMENT OF HATCHERY REARED PEARL OYSTER (PINCTADA MAZATLANICA; HANLEY 1856) SPAT

Journal of Shellfish Research, 2005
Abstract We evaluated experimental collection of Pinctada mazatlanica spat on substrates of different textures and colors placed at different depths within settlement tanks. When larvae reached the pediveliger stage (day 25), black-colored spat collectors (“envelope” type) composed of the following materials were offered as settlement substrates: onion

Harvest History and Current Densities of the Pearl Oyster Pinctada mazatlanica (Bivalvia: Pteriidae) in Las Perlas and Coiba Archipelagos, Panama

Journal of Shellfish Research, 2008
Abstract Four hundred years of commercial harvest of the oyster Pinctada mazatlanica in Pacific Panama were characterized by historical collapses and recoveries that finally ended in the 1940s; oyster populations have not recovered since then. This study provides a baseline and meta-analysis of current P.

Social monogamy in the shrimp Pontonia margarita, a symbiont of Pinctada mazatlanica, off the Pacific coast of Panama

Marine Biology, 2007
A previous study predicted the evolution of monogamy in symbiotic crustaceans inhabiting scarce, relatively small hosts in tropical environments where predation risk away from hosts is high. This prediction was tested in the shrimp Pontonia margarita, which inhabits the pearl oyster Pinctada mazatlanica.

DIGITAL IMAGE ANALYSIS OF LIPID AND PROTEIN HISTOCHEMICAL MARKERS FOR MEASURING OOCYTE DEVELOPMENT AND QUALITY IN PEARL OYSTER PINCTADA MAZATLANICA (HANLEY, 1856)

Journal of Shellfish Research, 2005
Abstract We applied quantitative histochemical techniques and digital image analysis to study seasonal cycles of use of lipid and protein reserves during vitellogenesis in the pearl oyster Pinctada mazatlanica. Female gonad samples were collected seasonally during an annual cycle and processed histologically to characterize the gametogenic cycle ...

Evidence for male-biased effective sex ratio and recent step-by-step colonization in the bivalvePinctada mazatlanica

Journal of Evolutionary Biology, 2003
AbstractThis paper presents a comparison of the geographical distribution of genetic variability at mitochondrial and nuclear loci among pearl oyster populations from the tropical American Pacific coast (Pinctada mazatlanica). Surprisingly, both mitochondrial and nuclear gene variability decreased regularly from north to south of the studied area ...

Towards development of large-scale hatchery cultivation of larvae and spat of the pearl oyster Pinctada mazatlanica in Mexico

Aquaculture, 2007
Abstract The results of a series of pilot-scale runs with P. mazatlanica larvae from 2004 through 2006 are reported. Preliminary runs in 2004 and 2005 used broodstock collected in summer, when massive spawning of wild populations naturally occurs. However, results of larval development were very poor and failed to produce spat in both years.

Physiological Capacity of Pinctada Mazatlanica to Receive Xenografts from Pteria Sterna, as a Criterion to Improve Pearl Production and Quality

Fish & Shellfish Immunology
This study reports the survival, hemocyte count and physiological response indicators of pearl oysters Pteria sterna and Pinctada mazatlanica seeded with allografts and xenografts for pearl culture. Two treatments of oysters receiving an allograft (both donor and host were Pt. sterna) or a xenograft (donor was Pt. sterna and host was P.
