Comparison of 2 Equine Transfixation Pin Casts and the Effects of Pin Removal
Veterinary Surgery, 2014ObjectiveTo (1) compare strain on the dorsal aspect of the proximal phalanx (P1) between 2 types of transfixation pin casts (TPC) and (2) evaluate the change in strain as the pins are removed.Study DesignExperimental.AnimalsEquine cadaver forelimbs (n = 10 pair).MethodsEach limb of a pair was assigned to 1 of 2 TPC constructs.

Pinning Effects in Nb Thin Films with Artificial Pinning Arrays
Journal of Superconductivity and Novel Magnetism, 2010We summarize some results on the behavior of vortex dynamics and pinning effects in superconducting films with artificial pinning centers. Superconducting thin films with regular arrays of holes were fabricated using electron-beam lithography and reactive dry etching techniques.

Allee Effects, Invasion Pinning, and Species’ Borders
The American Naturalist, 2001All species’ ranges are the result of successful past invasions. Thus, models of species’ invasions and their failure can provide insight into the formation of a species’ geographic range. Here, we study the properties of invasion models when a species cannot persist below a critical population density known as an “Allee threshold.” In both spatially ...

The pinning effect in quantum dots
AIP Conference Proceedings, 2014The pinning effect is studied in a Gaussian quantum dot using the improved Wigner-Brillouin perturbation theory (IWBPT) in the presence of electron-phonon interaction. The electron ground state plus one phonon state is degenerate with the electron in the first excited state.

The proximity effect in flux pinning
Journal of Applied Physics, 1980The elementary interaction force fp for a small normal conducting precipitate particle is usually estimated assuming that the entire condensation energy of the superconductor 1/2 μ0H2c is lost in the volume of the particle, i.e., that the particle is equivalent to a void.

Effect of pin depth on the dislodgement of pin-retained composite resin crown bases
The Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry, 1981Abstract A laboratory study was carried out to evaluate the effect of pin depth into dentin on the retention of composite resin crown bases. The crown bases were subjected to laterally applied dislodging forces. The results showed no statistically significant difference at the 95% confidence level in the retention of crown bases retained with pins ...

Effects of Pin Detached Space on Heat Transfer and Pin-Fin Arrays
Journal of Heat Transfer, 2012Heat transfer and pressure characteristics in a rectangular channel with pin-fin arrays of partial detachment from one of the endwalls have been experimentally studied. The overall channel geometry (W = 76.2 mm, E = 25.4 mm) simulates an internal cooling passage of wide aspect ratio (3:1) in a gas turbine airfoil. With a given pin diameter, D = 6.35 mm

Interfacial Crack Pinning: Effect of Nonlocal Interactions
Physical Review Letters, 1995We propose a perturbative approach to describe the evolution of an interfacial crack between two elastic solids with quenched disorder. The driving force is the stress intensity factor along the crack front. The latter is expressed as a function of the entire crack geometry through a linear convolution with a long-ranged kernel using a first order ...

Critical currents and the effects of pinning
IEEE Transactions on Magnetics, 1991The bulk magnetic properties of sintered materials are treated as those of a standard magnetic material with a permeability dependent on the porosity. If J/sub c/ is expressed as a function of the internal H instead of the applied field, it is much more constant.

The Effect of Angled Insertion on Halo Pin Fixation
Spine, 1989This study evaluated the effect of angled insertion of halo pins on the biomechanical characteristics of the halo pin-calvarium complex. Halo pins were inserted into isolated calvarium sections at 90 degrees, 75 degrees, and 60 degrees to the surface of the bone at an insertional torque of 0.68 N-m (6 inch-pounds).
