Soft computing for prediction of river pipeline scour depth

Neural Computing and Applications, 2012
This study presents gene-expression programming (GEP) as an alternative soft computing tool for the prediction of scour below underwater pipeline across river. Actual laboratory measurements were used for the model development. The scour depth was formulated in terms of several influencing parameters.

Scour under Submarine Pipelines in Waves in Shoaling Conditions

Journal of Waterway, Port, Coastal, and Ocean Engineering, 1999
Submarine pipelines, one of the most important subjects in coastal engineering, are widely used in coastal structures. In order to ensure these pipelines are stable and functional during their project life, attention must be paid to their design and coastal processes. In the design phase, the possibility of local scouring under submarine pipelines must

Pipeline route selection in an iceberg‐scoured seabed

Marine Geotechnology, 1989
Abstract This paper deals with the geotechnical considerations in selecting a pipeline route through a seabed subjected to iceberg scouring. Most of the continental shelf of the east coast of Canada has been subjected to ice scouring. Some of the scours are relict, having occurred during periods of lower sea levels, but modern scours can be found from ...

Simulation of Pipeline Vibration and Scour

2009
A vertical two-dimensional numerical model has been established to study the flow and scour around offshore pipelines. The Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations, pressure Poisson equations and turbulence equations are solved using a second-order accurate finite difference scheme formulated on a curvilinear coordinate system.

Genetic Programming to Predict River Pipeline Scour

Journal of Pipeline Systems Engineering and Practice, 2010
The process involved in the local scour below pipelines is so complex that makes it difficult to establish a general empirical model to provide an accurate estimation for scour. This technical note describes the use of genetic programming (GP) to estimate the pipeline scour depth.

Mechanical Analysis on the Scour of Submarine Pipeline

Advanced Materials Research, 2013
The reason about the scour of the submarine pipeline is researched in this paper. Through the mechanical analysis about the sand grain in the downstream of the pipe, the critical condition about of scour start is derived. The balance condition about the scour is studied.

Onset of scour below pipelines and self-burial

Coastal Engineering, 2001
Abstract This paper summarizes the results of an experimental study on the onset of scour below and self-burial of pipelines in currents/waves. Pressure was measured on the surface of a slightly buried pipe at two points, one at the upstream side and the other at the downstream side of the pipe, both in the sand bed.

Estimation of Pipeline Scour due to Waves by GMDH

Journal of Pipeline Systems Engineering and Practice, 2014
AbstractIn the present study, the group method of data handling (GMDH) network is applied to predict scour depth below pipelines exposed to waves. The GMDH network is trained using a back-propagation (BP) algorithm. The pipeline scour is modeled as a function of three-dimensionless parameters, including the Keulegan-Carpenter number, the ratio of the ...

Numerical Modeling of Flow and Scour at Pipelines

Journal of Hydraulic Engineering, 1999
A numerical model for the description of fluid flow and suspended and bed-load sediment transport is presented. Density effects are included in the momentum (Reynolds) equations and in the turbulence (kappa and epsilon) equations. Changes in bed levels are calculated from sediment continuity, and the finite-element grid is adapted to the geometry.

A Pipeline Case Study for Ice Scour Design

Volume 5: Ocean Space Utilization; Polar and Arctic Sciences and Technology; The Robert Dean Symposium on Coastal and Ocean Engineering; Special Symposium on Offshore Renewable Energy, 2007
The Arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian (ALE) Finite Element (FE) ice scour model developed in the previous years is used to study the importance of some of the pipe, seabed soil, and scour parameters. The effect of some of these parameters on the pipeline response is investigated.
