Prediction of Lee-Wake Scouring of Pipelines in Currents

Journal of Waterway, Port, Coastal, and Ocean Engineering, 2001
A numerical model for the equilibrium profiles of the local scour around pipelines is developed. The numerical model solves the turbulence flow field around the pipeline using a large eddy simulation model in a curvilinear coordinate system with frequent updates of the scoured seabed. The iteration method of determining the equilibrium scour profile is

Numerical study of scour around a pipeline bundle

Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers - Maritime Engineering, 2008
A well-established two-dimensional numerical model was employed to study the scour-hole development around a pipeline bundle, which was composed of a main pipeline and a piggyback pipeline. Both the current and wave flow situations were simulated with parameters chosen to represent prototype pipeline scour in adverse weather conditions. Under the same

Mechanics of Local Scour Around Submarine Pipelines

Journal of Hydraulic Engineering, 1990
The primary objective of this study is to improve understanding of the mechanism causing scour in unidirectional current. Experiments have shown how local scour develops around submarine pipelines in noncohesive sediments. The study shows that piping is the dominant cause of the initiation of scour.

Numerical investigation of the scouring around pipelines

2009
Pipelines laid on the seabed interact with currents and waves, generating a local velocity field and pressure gradients between the upstream and downstream sides of the pipe. If the pipe is laid on a sandy bottom, the interaction of pressure gradients with the bottom can drive a seepage flow, allowing the wet sand to be dragged by the shear stress.

Prediction of Maximum Scour Depth at Submarine Pipelines

Journal of Hydraulic Engineering, 1991
This paper examines and reviews published results relating to local scour around submarine pipelines. It highlights the limitations of existing methods for estimating scour depth at the pipeline. Based on experimental results, the study proposes an empirical function relating the amount of gap flow through the scour hole for given flow conditions. With

Wave-Induced Scour Around Offshore Pipelines

Offshore Technology Conference, 1977
ABSTRACT The size, numbers and applications of offshore pipelines are steadily increasing; pipelines carry crude oil from oil fields to shore; refined oil from offshore ports; municipal and industrial waste from shore into deeper water; in the future, bulk commodities may be carried from offshore ports to shore.
