Trends in Medicinal Uses of Edible Wild Vertebrates in Brazil

open access: yesEvidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine, Volume 2017, Issue 1, 2017., 2017
The use of food medicines is a widespread practice worldwide. In Brazil, such use is often associated with wild animals, mostly focusing on vertebrate species. Here we assessed taxonomic and ecological trends in traditional uses of wild edible vertebrates in the country, through an extensive ethnobiological database analysis. Our results showed that at

A Revision of the Neotropical Orb‐Weaving Spider Genus Scoloderus (Araneae: Araneidae)

open access: yesPsyche: A Journal of Entomology, Volume 102, Issue 1-2, Page 49-72, 1995., 1995
More than one‐fourth of the spiders examined for this revision were collected since the neotropical genus Scoloderus was revised in 1976. Thirteen names have been proposed for what appear to be five valid species (Scoloderus cordatus, S. gibber, S. nigriceps, S. tuberculifer, and S. ackerlyi).

Fine‐Scale Genomic Divergence in the Amazonian Pirarucu (Arapaima gigas) Highlights the Need for Local Management Strategies

open access: yesFreshwater Biology, Volume 71, Issue 3, March 2026.
ABSTRACT Freshwater habitats face significant human disturbances globally, impacting food security and ecosystems. Protected areas can mitigate biodiversity loss, but limited data on population connectivity hinders conservation management. This study examines pirarucu (Arapaima gigas), a heavily exploited and threatened Amazonian fish, using genomic ...

Practical Diets Formulated With Different Plant‐Based Energy Ingredients Modulate Nutrient Utilization and Gut Morphology in Tambaqui (Colossoma macropomum)

open access: yesAquaculture Nutrition, Volume 2026, Issue 1, 2026.
Despite the increasing use of plant‐based energy ingredients in aquaculture, few studies have evaluated the digestibility of practical diets formulated with these ingredients in an integrated manner with the metabolic responses, intestinal health, and productive performance of fish. This limits the understanding of their nutritional effects. This study

Monitoring of Salmonella spp. in Native Fish Farms in the Pantanal and Cerrado Biomes, Brazil: Serotype Diversity, Antimicrobial Resistance Profiles, and Multivatiate Patterns

open access: yesJournal of Food Safety, Volume 45, Issue 6, December 2025.
This study investigated Salmonella spp. occurrence, serotypes, antimicrobial resistance, and associated environmental and management factors in 25 native fish farms located in the Pantanal and Cerrado biomes, Brazil. A total of 184 fish and environmental samples were analyzed using standardized methods and multivariate statistics. Salmonella spp.

Optimum dietary crude protein requirement for juvenile cachama Piaractus brachypomus Exigência ótima de proteína bruta para juvenis de pirapitinga, Piaractus brachypomus

open access: yesCiência Rural, 2011
A growth experiment was conducted to determine the optimal dietary protein requirement for juvenile cachama, Piaractus brachypomus. Six semi-purified isoenergetic experimental diets using casein and gelatin as protein sources were formulated to contain ...

Impacts of Hydroelectric Dams on Amazonian Fisheries: Assessing Functional Attributes in the Madeira River

open access: yesRiver Research and Applications, Volume 41, Issue 7, Page 1493-1502, September 2025.
ABSTRACT The Madeira River is one of the main tributaries of the Amazon Basin, supporting over 1300 known fish species. Fisheries in this region play a critical role for riverine populations, serving as a primary source of income and sustenance. In 2011, the construction of the Jirau and Santo Antônio hydroelectric dams (HEDs) was completed along the ...

Effects of Stocking Densities on the Growth Performance and Physiology of Juvenile Piaractus brachypomus in Recirculating Aquaculture System

open access: yesFishes
The effects of different stocking densities on the growth and physiology of juvenile Piaractus brachypomus were evaluated in two experiments. Experiment I used juveniles weighing 1.5 ± 0.4 g at the following densities for 20 days: D0.68—0.68 kg/m3; D1.45—

Associations between morphometric variables and weight and yields carcass in PirapitingaPiaractus brachypomus

open access: yesAquaculture Research, 2019
The objective of this work was to evaluate the association between morphometric variables and carcass characteristics in Pirapitinga. We used a thousand specimens of Pirapitinga with an average weight of 1,200 g, which were stunned, slaughtered, weighed, measured, and processed for morphometric and processing yield analysis, to obtain weights, carcass ...
