Noninvasive assessment of corticosterone and triiodothyronine levels in the endangered Pyrenean Capercaillie (Tetrao urogallus aquitanicus)

open access: yesJournal of Zoology, Volume 327, Issue 2, Page 183-195, October 2025.
Feathers are useful in the study of glucocorticoid and thyroid hormones in Pyrenean Capercaillies. Samples from the Northern Pyrenees and Pre‐Pyrenees contained lower corticosterone concentrations, and a negative correlation was found between corticosterone levels and the distance from cycling trails.

The Permo‐Carboniferous Basins of the Catalan Pyrenees (NE Iberia): An Example of Interacting Tectonics and Collapse Calderas

open access: yesTectonics, Volume 44, Issue 7, July 2025.
Abstract The Permo‐Carboniferous terrains of the Catalan Pyrenees show evidence of extensive calc‐alkaline orogenic volcanism with predominant pyroclastic deposits of dacitic to rhyodacitic composition. These Permo‐Carboniferous basins have been interpreted as volcano‐tectonic depressions associated with a transtensional regime following the Variscan ...

Trophic Interactions Are Key to Understanding the Effects of Global Change on the Distribution and Functional Role of the Brown Bear

open access: yesGlobal Change Biology, Volume 31, Issue 6, June 2025.
This study shows that what animals eat—and where their food lives—can strongly influence where the animals themselves are found, even across entire continents. By modeling the diet and habitat of the brown bear across Europe, the research reveals that including food web relationships improves predictions of where bears live now and where they might ...

How many sequences should I track when applying the random encounter model to camera trap data?

open access: yesJournal of Zoology, Volume 324, Issue 2, Page 155-162, October 2024.
This study focused on random encounter model (REM) optimization for camera trap data. We concluded that reconstructing the trajectory of around 100 animals crossing the field of view of the camera returned equivalent precision to the one obtained by tracking a considerably higher number of sequences. Survey periods of ca. 2 months are also recommended.

Markers for meat provenance and authenticity with an account of its defining factors and quality characteristics – a review

open access: yesJournal of the Science of Food and Agriculture, Volume 104, Issue 12, Page 7027-7084, September 2024.
Abstract Provenance is becoming increasingly important in meat supply chains as it lends products higher perceived quality. However, its precise definition and interpretation along with its associated characteristics factors have remained somewhat elusive.

Inbreeding depression and runs of homozygosity islands in Asturiana de los Valles cattle breed after 30 years of selection

open access: yesJournal of Animal Breeding and Genetics, Volume 141, Issue 4, Page 440-452, July 2024.
Abstract Inbreeding depression results in a decrease in the average phenotypic values of affected traits. It has been traditionally estimated from pedigree‐based inbreeding coefficients. However, with the development of single‐nucleotide polymorphism arrays, novel methods were developed for calculating the inbreeding coefficient, and consequently ...

Longevity in South African Afrikaner cows as assessed through survival analysis

open access: yesJournal of Animal Breeding and Genetics, Volume 141, Issue 3, Page 343-352, May 2024.
Abstract The Afrikaner breed of cattle is indigenous to South Africa and, due to their hardiness, was once the most popular breed amongst South African farmers, although in recent years their numbers have decreased. The goal of this study was to assess factors affecting length of productive life, defined as the interval between production of the first ...

The role of historical biogeography in shaping colour morph diversity in the common wall lizard

open access: yesMolecular Ecology, Volume 33, Issue 9, May 2024.
Abstract The maintenance of polymorphisms often depends on multiple selective forces, but less is known on the role of stochastic or historical processes in maintaining variation. The common wall lizard (Podarcis muralis) is a colour polymorphic species in which local colour morph frequencies are thought to be modulated by natural and sexual selection.

Species richness of Orthoptera declines with elevation while elevational range of individual species peaks at mid elevation

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 14, Issue 2, February 2024.
Understanding the distribution of organisms along elevational gradients across a range of latitudes and geographical areas is important to be able to inform conservation measures. Using Orthoptera in the Pyrenees as a study system, we found a decline in species richness with increasing elevation, but no evidence for Rapoport's elevational rule ...
