Pomegranate (Punica granatum) Peel Inhibits the In Vitro and In Vivo Growth of Piroplasm Parasites
Pomegranate (Punica granatum) peel has seen a rapid surge in attention as a medical and nutritional product over the last decade. The impact of pomegranate peel methanolic extract monotherapy and combination therapy on the in vitro growth of Babesia (B.)

Abstract Background African horse sickness (AHS), caused by the vector‐borne African horse sickness virus (AHSV), is endemic to sub‐Saharan Africa and infection results in high mortality in naïve equine populations. Clinical signs include submucosal petechiae and prolonged bleeding post venepuncture indicative of hypocoagulation.

First molecular survey of piroplasm species in cattle from Kyrgyzstan
Bovine piroplasmosis is a tick-borne disease caused by apicomplexan hemoparasites of the genera Theileria and Babesia. This study was carried out to assess the presence and frequency of piroplasm parasites in apparently healthy cattle in Kyrgyzstan.

Molecular identification and characterization of piroplasm species in Hokkaido sika deer (Cervus nippon yesoensis), Japan [PDF]
Babesia and Theileria species are tick-borne protozoan parasites that have a veterinary and zoonotic importance. In order to investigate the prevalence and genetic diversity of these parasites, a total of 269 sika deer blood DNA samples collected from ...

Targeted Next-Generation Sequencing and Informatics as an Effective Tool to Establish the Composition of Bovine Piroplasm Populations in Endemic Regions. [PDF]
Protists of the genera Babesia and Theileria (piroplasms) cause some of the most prevalent and debilitating diseases for bovines worldwide. In this study, we established and used a next-generation sequencing-informatic approach to explore the composition

Spatiotemporal Dynamics of Blood Parasite Infections and Impacts on Avian Health and Reproduction
ABSTRACT Parasitic infections are ubiquitous in nature, but their consequences are often difficult to evaluate in wildlife. This is particularly the case for chronic infections for which fitness impacts can be subtle or confounded with other intrinsic and extrinsic factors.

In Vitro Monitoring of Babesia microti Infection Dynamics in Whole Blood Microenvironments
Here, an open microfluidic platform termed “µ‐Blood” is reported for real‐time, continuous monitoring of Babesia microti infection dynamics in vitro. µ‐Blood allows direct interrogation of whole blood with preserved integrity of the original whole blood microenvironment through an extended period (e.g., 72 h with mouse red blood cells) ex vivo. µ‐Blood
