The Biology and Molecular Detection of Piscirickettsia Salmonis
2002Piscirickettsia salmonis is an emerging obligate intracellular bacterial pathogen of salmonids (Fryer and Mauel 1997). This Gram-negative pleiomorphic coccoid bacterium replicates within membrane-bound cytoplasmic vacuoles in the cells of infected fish.

Carbohydrate Research, 2013
Elucidation of the carbohydrate backbone structure of the lipopolysaccharide (LPS) from Piscirickettsia salmonis, the etiological agent of the salmonid rickettsial septicemia, is described. Structural information was established by a combination of monosaccharide and methylation analyses of LPS, and by NMR and mass spectrometries of oligosaccharides ...

Piscirickettsia salmonis, a major pathogen of salmonid fish in Chile
Fisheries Research, 1993Abstract Piscirickettsiosis has resulted in extensive losses among salmonid fishes cultured in southern Chile. It occurs at many seawater sites near Puerto Montt, where recurring epizootics have frequently resulted in mortality approaching 90% among the coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) cultured there.

We report a novel genetically different small infective variant of the fish pathogen Piscirickettsia salmonis (sP.s). sP.s variants were recovered both from ageing post-infected CHSE-214 culture cells as well as from naturally infected fish. The ITS region of sP.s variants, although sharing a common core sequence, is different from the ITS of the ...

Piscirickettsia salmonis: a Gram‐negative intracellular bacterial pathogen of fish
Journal of Fish Diseases, 2003Piscirickettsia salmonis is the first Gram-negative, intracellular bacterial pathogen isolated from fish and is a significant cause of mortality in salmonid fish. Recent reports of P. salmonis or P. salmonis-like organisms from new fish hosts and geographic regions have increased the interest in the bacterium.

Survival and replication of Piscirickettsia salmonis in rainbow trout head kidney macrophages
Fish & Shellfish Immunology, 2008Piscirickettsia salmonis is pathogenic for a variety of cultured marine fish species worldwide. The organism has been observed within host macrophages in natural disease outbreaks among coho salmon and European sea bass. In vitro studies, incorporating transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and ferritin loading of lysosomes, have confirmed that P ...

A vaccine against the salmonid pathogen Piscirickettsia salmonis based on recombinant proteins
Vaccine, 2006We report here the protective effect against piscirickettsiosis elicited in fish by a mixture of recombinant proteins. A comparative genomics strategy was used on a genomic library of Piscirickettsia salmonis in order to select optimal candidates for a recombinant subunit vaccine to protect fish from rickettsial septicaemia (SRS).

Piscirickettsia salmonis is a fish bacterium that causes the disease piscirickettsiosis in salmonids. This pathology is partially controlled by vaccines. The lack of knowledge has hindered its culture on laboratory and industrial scale. The study describes the metabolic phenotype of P. salmonis in culture.

A new liquid medium for the pathogen Piscirickettsia salmonis
