Finite temperature Casimir pistons for electromagnetic field with mixed boundary conditions and its classical limit [PDF]
In this paper, the finite temperature Casimir force acting on a two-dimensional Casimir piston due to electromagnetic field is computed. It was found that if mixed boundary conditions are assumed on the piston and its opposite wall, then the Casimir force always tends to restore the piston towards the equilibrium position, regardless of the boundary ...

High Mach number limit of one-dimensional piston problem for non-isentropic compressible Euler equations: Polytropic gas [PDF]
We study high Mach number limit of the one dimensional piston problem for the full compressible Euler equations of polytropic gas, for both cases that the piston rushes into or recedes from the uniform still gas, at a constant speed. There are two different situations, and one needs to consider measure solutions of the Euler equations to deal with ...

Non-equilibrium dynamics of the piston in the Szilard engine [PDF]
We consider a Szilard engine in one dimension, consisting of a single particle of mass $m$, moving between a piston of mass $M$, and a heat reservoir at temperature $T$. In addition to an external force, the piston experiences repeated elastic collisions with the particle.

CASIMIR PISTONS WITH CURVED BOUNDARIES [PDF]
In this paper we study the Casimir force for a piston configuration in R3 with one dimension being slightly curved and the other two infinite. We work for two different cases with this setup. In the first, the piston is "free to move" along a transverse dimension to the curved one and in the other case the piston "moves" along the curved one.

Roles of Dry Friction in Fluctuating Motion of Adiabatic Piston [PDF]
The motion of an adiabatic piston under dry friction is investigated to clarify the roles of dry friction in non-equilibrium steady states. We clarify that dry friction can reverse the direction of the piston motion and causes a discontinuity or a cusp-like singularity for velocity distribution functions of the piston.

Numerical investigation of the real and ideal gap profiles in the calculation of the pressure distortion coefficient and piston fall rate of an LNE 200 MPa pressure balance [PDF]
This paper aims to investigate, by means of numerical simulation, the effect of gap profiles on the calculation of the pressure distortion coefficient (λ) and the piston fall rate (vf) of two piston-cylinder units used in a Laboratoire National de ...

Clear as black and white: the effects of ambiguous rhetoric depend on candidate race [PDF]
Campaign advisors and political scientists have long acknowledged the benefits of ambiguous position taking. We argue, however, that these benefits do not extend to black candidates facing nonblack voters.

Explaining public support for counterproductive homeless policy: the role of disgust [PDF]
Federal, state, and city governments spend substantial funds on programs intended to aid homeless people, and such programs attract widespread public support.

THE INFLUENCE OF ENGINE SPEED ON THERMAL STRESSES OF THE PISTON [PDF]
In the paper, numeric calculations relating to the influence of engine speed on thermal stresses of the piston in a turbocharged diesel engine in the initial phase of its work were carried out.
