Pitch Transition and Pitch Stability

2017
The pitch is the fundamental parameter for understanding objectively various aspect of melodic music. A pitch contour describes a series of relative pitch transitions adjoining the abstractions of a sequence of steady states called notes. While the quasi stationary states in the dynamics of pitch in Indian music have been elaborately discussed in other

The perception of pitch

2012
This article discusses pitch perception, beginning with a brief introduction to the function of the auditory system. It considers what limitations there are on our ability to extract frequency information from the sounds reaching our ears, and provides an orientation for some of the mechanisms described in the later sections.

Pitch of the Residue

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1962
The residue is defined as the joint perception of a number of Fourier components. Depending on circumstances outside the scope of this paper, it has a pronounced pitch. The consequences of this phenomenon for the theory of hearing are briefly reviewed in the light of past experiments.

On the Relativity of Pitch

Perception, 1982
The way we interpret a given set of sensory stimuli can depend very strongly on our choice of cues. The resulting ambiguity is particularly familiar in visual perception, and underlies many well-known visual illusions. It is shown that comparable ambiguities exist in the field of hearing, particularly pitch perception.

Taste and Pitch

Perceptual and Motor Skills, 1968
This paper describes a new method of quantitative determination of taste. In a special experimental situation S compares taste and pure tones. The latter are varied in pitch until S finds the pitch which characterizes the sample. The method is illustrated by results for two samples, Carlsberg Lager and Carlsberg Elephant Beer. New problems are involved

Pitch and Pitch Perception

2018
This chapter addresses sensation and perception of pitch mainly from a functional perspective. Anatomical and physiological facts concerning the auditory pathway are provided to the extent necessary to understand excitation processes resulting from sound energy in the middle ear as well as within the cochlea.

“Periodicity” Pitch and “Place” Pitch

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1954
In the year of the founding of the Acoustical Society of America, Wever and Bray observed periodic “volleys” of impulses in the auditory nerve. Since that time, the theory of pitch perception—particularly, whether pitch depends upon the frequency of the discharges or upon the locus of the active neural tissue—has been one of the most active issues in ...

Life's a Pitch

Journal of Visual Communication in Medicine, 2010
Competing for large external design and branding contracts can be daunting - however, this article explains how it can also be healthy for more than just the bottom line of your budget.

Pitch coding and pitch processing in the human brain

Hearing Research, 2014
Neuroimaging studies have provided important information regarding how and where pitch is coded and processed in the human brain. Recordings of the frequency-following response (FFR), an electrophysiological measure of neural temporal coding in the brainstem, have shown that the precision of temporal pitch information is dependent on linguistic and ...
