Holographic Mapping of Orbital Angular Momentum using a Terahertz Diffractive Optical Neural Network

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Discovery, EarlyView.
A compact six‐layer diffractive optical neural network enables direct recognition and spatial mapping of terahertz (THz) orbital angular momentum (OAM) beams. Fabricated by 3D printing, the system distinguishes nine OAM modes and their superpositions with high fidelity, good efficiency, and low crosstalk, offering a scalable solution for THz ...

Investigating the effect of long-term musical experience on the auditory processing skills of young Maltese adults [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
Learning and practising a musical instrument has recently been thought to ‘train’ the brain into processing sound in a more refined manner. As a result, musicians experiencing consistent exposure to musical practice have been suspected to have ...

Lidar‐Based Object Tracking of Traffic Participants with Sensor Nodes in Existing Urban Infrastructure

open access: yesAdvanced Intelligent Systems, EarlyView.
This paper presents a lidar‐based sensor node design and a rule‐based state observer for edge‐based traffic participant tracking. Unlike other state‐of‐the‐art methods, this state observer enables real‐time, CPU‐only edge processing without relying on machine learning approaches.

Anchor effects on the discrimination of pitch [PDF]

open access: yesPerception & Psychophysics, 1972
Two experiments considered the effects of introducing an extreme stimulus (anchor) upon the differential perception of tonal stimuli. In the first experiment, in which Ss rated series stimuli from 1,000 to 2,000 Hz or from 2,000 to 3,000 Hz, the presence of a 750-Hz anchor apparently disrupted discrimination.

Synthetic Speech Discrimination using Pitch Pattern Statistics Derived from Image Analysis

open access: yes, 2012
In this paper, we extend the work by Ogihara, et al. to discriminate between human and synthetic speech using features based on pitch patterns. As previously demonstrated, significant differences in pitch patterns between human and synthetic speech can ...

Memory for pitch in congenital amusia: Beyond a fine-grained pitch discrimination problem [PDF]

open access: yes, 2010
Congenital amusia is a disorder that affects the perception and production of music. While amusia has been associated with deficits in pitch discrimination, several reports suggest that memory deficits also play a role.

Am I tone-deaf? Assessing pitch discrimination in 700,000 people [PDF]

open access: yes, 2021
Congenital amusia of pitch (tone-deafness), which affects ~1.5% of the population, involves a deficit in pitch processing affecting the perception of musical melody and some speech contrasts.

Feasibility Study for Application of Digitized Henize Mt. Wilson Michigan Southern Sky Hα$$ \boldsymbol{\alpha} $$ Survey Low‐Dispersive Spectral Plates for Searches for Anomalous and Highly Redshifted Objects

open access: yesAstronomische Nachrichten, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The goal of this study is to confirm the feasibility of the use of digitized low dispersive MtWilson Michigan Southern Sky Hα$$ \alpha $$ survey astronomical photographic plates for modern astrophysical research. The detection of highly redshifted objects, such as early galaxies and quasars, is fundamental to understanding the universe's ...

What is a melody? On the relationship between pitch and brightness of timbre

open access: yesFrontiers in Systems Neuroscience, 2014
Previous studies showed that the perceptual processing of sound sequences is more efficient when the sounds vary in pitch than when they vary in loudness.
