Auditory–Tactile Congruence for Synthesis of Adaptive Pain Expressions in RoboPatients

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
In this work, we explore auditory–tactile congruence for synthesizing adaptive vocal pain expressions in robopatients. Using a robopatient platform that integrates vocal pain sounds with palpation forces, we conducted 7680 trials across 20 participants.

Top-Down Modulation on the Perception and Categorization of Identical Pitch Contours in Speech and Music

open access: yesFrontiers in Psychology, 2016
Whether pitch in language and music is governed by domain-specific or domain-general cognitive mechanisms is contentiously debated. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether mechanisms governing pitch contour perception operate differently ...

ChicGrasp: Imitation‐Learning‐Based Customized Dual‐Jaw Gripper Control for Manipulation of Delicate, Irregular Bio‐Products

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
Automated poultry processing lines still rely on humans to lift slippery, easily bruised carcasses onto a shackle conveyor. Deformability, anatomical variance, and hygiene rules make conventional suction and scripted motions unreliable. We present ChicGrasp, an end‐to‐end hardware‐software co‐designed imitation learning framework, to offer a ...

A Duplex Theory of Pitch Perception [PDF]

open access: yesThe Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1951
In the theories of pitch perception now widely supported, pitch is regarded as a unitary attribute of auditory experience. There is good evidence, however, that there are actually two pitch-like attributes, and it is reasonable to suppose that the duplexity of pitch is a reflection of duplexity in the auditory process.

Model for pitch perception [PDF]

open access: yesThe Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1974
The three important stages in pitch perception are (1) acoustic to mechanical transformation, (2) mechanical to neural changes, and (3) neural firings to perception. The developed model incorporates all three of these stages for explaining pitch perception.

Compliant Pneumatic Feet with Real‐Time Stiffness Adaptation for Humanoid Locomotion

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
A compliant pneumatic foot with real‐time variable stiffness enables humanoid robots to adapt to changing terrains. Using onboard vision and pressure control, the foot modulates stiffness within each gait cycle, reducing impact forces and improving balance. The design, cast in soft silicone with embedded air chambers and Kevlar wrapping, offers durable,

Hierarchical Summary Statistics Encoding Across Primary Visual and Posterior Parietal Cortices

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
This study shows that mouse V1 simultaneously encodes the ensemble mean and variance of motion, providing a robust summary‐statistic representation that persists despite single‐neuron variability. These signals propagate to PPC, where they are transformed into abstract category representations during decision making.

A Central Somatic Transmission Mediates Proprioceptive Facilitation of Muscle Pain

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Zhang et al. uncover a novel central mechanism for persistent muscle pain, in which TRPA1 sensitization in MeV proprioceptive neurons enhances somatic secretion. This, in turn, disinhibits descending pain control from neighboring noradrenergic locus coeruleus neurons via local GABAergic circuits, thereby promoting inflammatory muscle pain.

Sequential dependencies in pitch perception [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Studies that measure pitch discrimination relate a subject's response on each trial to the stimuli presented on that trial, but there is evidence that behavior depends also on earlier stimulation.
