Dominance relations and the pituitary-adrenal system in rats
Animal Behaviour, 1972Abstract It has been shown that plasma corticosterone level in isolated male albino rats was considerably lower than in grouped rats. Plasma corticosterone level in grouped animals increased during wakefulness and diminished in the sleepy state. Dominance relations were studied by observing the ‘spontaneous’ behaviour of rats kept in groups of ten ...

Conditioned taste aversion and the pituitary-adrenal system
Behavioral Biology, 1976Plasma corticosterone levels of male rats were found to be elevated for 2–4 hr following injection of a toxic dosage of LiCl, while pretreatment with dexamethasone suppressed this pituitary-adrenal activation. These data suggest that both ACTH and corticosteroid levels are elevated at the time of taste aversion conditioning.

The hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal system in panic disorder
American Journal of Psychiatry, 1987The authors evaluated 24 outpatients with panic disorder by means of the afternoon continuous test for cortisol and the 1-mg dexamethasone suppression test (DST) and compared the results with those of 38 outpatients with major depressive disorder and 61 healthy control subjects.

Effect of Aminoglutethimide and Glutethimide on the Pituitary-Adrenal System
Pharmacology, 2008Aminoglutethimide (AG) has been shown to inhibit adrenal steroidogenesis. The present study was designed to deter mine the time pattern of adrenal suppression following a single dose of this compound in rats and compare it to that of its structural relative, glutethimide (G).

Mathematical modeling of the hypothalamic–pituitary–adrenal system activity
Mathematical Biosciences, 2005Mathematical modeling has proven to be valuable in understanding of the complex biological systems dynamics. In the present report we have developed an initial model of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal system self-regulatory activity. A four-dimensional non-linear differential equation model of the hormone secretion was formulated and used to analyze

The development of our knowledge of the pituitary-adrenal system had its earliest beginnings in the observations of a distinguished London physician, Thomas Addison (1793–1860). In a search for the cause of pernicious anemia, he read a paper to the South London Medical Society entitled “On anemia: disease of the suprarenal capsules.” He described the ...

Evaluation of antioxidant systems in pituitary-adrenal axis diseases
Pituitary, 2009The role of adrenal steroids in antioxidant regulation is not known. Previously, we demonstrated some Coenzyme Q(10) (CoQ(10)) alterations in pituitary diseases, which can induce complex pictures due to alterations of different endocrine axes. Therefore we determined CoQ(10) and Total Antioxidant Capacity (TAC) in pituitary-dependent adrenal diseases ...

The Pituitary—Adrenal System and the Developing Brain
1970Publisher Summary This chapter discusses evidence for the hypothesis that adrenal hormones may have a similar organizing effect on the developing central nervous system both with regard to neuroendocrine regulation of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) synthesis and release and with certain aspects of the behavior of adult organisms. An initial study

The Limbic System and the Pituitary—Adrenal Axis
1970Publisher Summary This chapter discusses the influence of the limbic system upon the pituitary-adrenal axis. The limbic system appears to be involved in activating or inhibiting basic drives as well as their concomitant hormone release. The anterior and medial hypothalamic areas are regarded as integrating centers for the regulation of pituitary ...

Hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis and immune system.
Acta neurologica, 1994Complex and bidirectional relationships operate between the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and the immune system (IS) and either in vivo or in vitro evidence supports a physiological role of the HPA axis-IS network. A part of the well-known pharmacological effects of glucocorticoid hormones (GC) as immunodepressive agents, the direct effects
