Pituitary abscess is a rare disease, but one with potentially high mortality and morbidity. We present a 46-year-old man with progressive visual disturbance and general malaise for 1 year. Endocrine studies revealed hypopituitarism, and magnetic resonance imaging revealed a pituitary lesion with suprasellar extension.

This report describes the presentation, pre-operative findings, surgical management and follow-up results of 20 pediatric patients with pituitary adenomas. The most common presenting complaints encountered were, headache and decrease in visual acuity. Among the patients with endocrine problems, majority had frank Cushing's disease (30%). Nine patients (

Pituitary carcinomas are defined by their metastatic growth. Most of them also invade into surrounding tissues. They should be classified by the site of their metastases (cerebrospinal, systemic, or combined) and by the presumable cell type of origin, respectively with the hormone being demonstrable by immunohistochemistry (adrenocorticotrophic hormone

Primary Care: Clinics in Office Practice
In this article, we will review common pituitary disorders. There are 6 hormones secreted by the anterior pituitary gland: thyroid-stimulating hormone, adrenocorticotropic hormone, follicle-stimulating hormone, luteinizing hormone, growth hormone, and prolactin.

Over the past 12 years we encountered three histologically confirmed pituitary metastases. Primary cancer had been diagnosed and treated previously in only one patient. In the remaining two a transsphenoidal operation provided the initial diagnosis of metastasis, and the primary lesion was subsequently detected at autopsy in one.

A 66-year-old woman presenting with pituitary insufficiency was operated on for an intrasellar tumor. Surprisingly, this tumor, at first suspected to be a hormone-inactive pituitary adenoma, consisted in fact of sarcoid granulomatous tissue in the pituitary gland as found histologically.

Great strides have been made in the understanding of anatomy, physiology, pathology, diagnosis, and treatment of pituitary adenomas. The single greatest credit should probably be given to the rapid advancement in surgical techniques that ushered in a new era of multispecialty interest in the pituitary and its disorders.

This review summarizes current knowledge on pathology of proliferative lesions of the human pituitary. The morphologic classification of pituitary adenomas--based on histology, immunohistochemistry and electron microscopy--has now been firmly established.

Current Opinion in Oncology, 1994
This review focuses on recent developments in the treatment of pituitary adenomas. Current treatments include both transcranial and transsphenoidal surgery, the medical treatment specifically for endocrinopathies, and finally, radiation treatments including conventional radiation as well as stereotactic radiosurgery. All these modalities are reviewed.
