The Pituitary Gland in Hyperthyroidism
Mayo Clinic Proceedings, 1992The pituitary glands of 33 patients (24 women and 9 men, 18 to 78 years old) who died in thyrotoxicosis (18 with Graves' disease and 15 with toxic multinodular goiter [Plummer's disease]) were examined by histologic and immunocytologic methods. Thirteen patients (39%) died in "thyroid storm." The avidin-biotin-peroxidase complex immunostaining method ...

Publisher Summary The pituitary gland, or hypophysis cerebri, is a small pea-shaped organ weighing 0.5gm. It lies at the base of the brain behind and below the crossing optic nerve fibers in the pituitary fossa of the sphenoid bone. The gland is attached to the base of the brain by a short stalk, the infundibulum.

This book is an ambitious effort: 21 chapters, 48 figures, 105 tables, and almost 1500 references. A book on the pituitary gland should contain information on anatomy and imaging, normal function, and endocrine and nonendocrine aspects of pituitary diseases, with strategies for diagnosis and treatment.

Vasoinhibins and the Pituitary Gland [PDF]
Vasoinhibins are a family of peptides that inhibit blood vessel growth, dilation, permeability, and survival. They are generated by the proteolytic cleavage of prolactin by cathepsin D, matrix metalloproteases, and bone morphogenic protein-1. Lactotropes within the anterior pituitary gland produce and release vasoinhibins.

Craniopharyngeal Pituitary Gland
JAMA: The Journal of the American Medical Association, 1963A patient is described who did not mature and at age 20 had a calcified suprasellar cystic meningioma removed. For the next 24 years he showed all of the signs and symptoms of panhypopituitarism except normal pigmentation. At autopsy, a normal craniopharyngeal pituitary was found encased in bone and separated from the hypothalamus by a callus replacing

The hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis is central to mammalian reproductive function, including conception, pregnancy maintenance, parturition, and breastfeeding. Pregnancy is associated with substantial physiologic changes within this endocrine axis to meet the demands of pregnancy, which include support of the fetus (volume support, nutritional and ...

Symptomatic pituitary metastasis is an uncommon clinical problem. It may be difficult to distinguish pituitary metastasis from pituitary adenomas both clinically and radiographically. We present our experience with these tumors and compare it with the findings in the literature.Eight cases are reported here. The medical records were reviewed concerning

Publisher Summary Hormone secretions in the pituitary glands control the growth and activity of three other endocrine glands: the thyroid, adrenals, and gonads. This chapter describes the structure, physiology and functions of pituitary gland, and general aspects of the regulation of anterior pituitary function.

Few human pituitary tumor cell lines have been established. This scarcity may be related to the fact that hormone production rapidly declines within weeks to months after initiation of the culture. In addition, the number of proliferating cells in pituitary adenomas is very low.
