Entorhinal Place Cells: Trajectory Encoding
2002If an animal is to successfully navigate through its environment it must not only know where it is, but also where it has been, where it should go, and the relationship among positions in its environment. An animal scavenging for food, for example, needs to remember the set of locations it has visited so that it does waste time retracing its steps.

A place for place cells in post-stroke cognitive impairment
Trends in NeurosciencesIn a recent study, Heiser et al. showed that hippocampal place cell stability and spatial encoding were disrupted in mice after brain-wide microstrokes. These findings suggest that hippocampal neurons are particularly vulnerable to dysfunction after stroke, even in the absence of local lesions.

PLACE CELLS. Autoassociative dynamics in the generation of sequences of hippocampal place cells.
Science (New York, N.Y.), 2015Neuronal circuits produce self-sustaining sequences of activity patterns, but the precise mechanisms remain unknown. Here we provide evidence for autoassociative dynamics in sequence generation. During sharp-wave ripple (SWR) events, hippocampal neurons express sequenced reactivations, which we show are composed of discrete attractors.
