Abstract Hornblende amphibole is difficult to deform plastically in experiments due to its anisotropic nature and breakdown at relatively low temperatures (∼850°C). The lack of experimental analysis of hornblende plasticity hampers interpreting the deformation mechanisms of natural samples, which remain unresolved and debated.

Specimens found in the Alan Hills area include 361 ordinary chondrites, 4 carbonaceous chondrites, 6 achondrites, and 2 irons. Thirteen specimens measured over 11 cm in diameter and 69 between 5 to 10 cm in diameter are reported.

Cooling‐Induced Rheological Weakening Along the Nascent Plate Interface—A Mechanism for Catastrophic Subduction Initiation?

Abstract Subduction initiation often begins with slow, forced convergence, switches “on” catastrophically as the slab collapses into the mantle, and then evolves to steady‐state, self‐sustained sinking that drives global plate movements. Numerical models suggest that the collapse phase implies sudden weakening of the plate interface.
