Antibiotic susceptibility of marine Planctomycetes

Antonie van Leeuwenhoek, 2019
Antimicrobials are naturally produced by microbes and therefore have always been present in their environment, as well as accompanying resistance mechanisms. The antibiotic resistance profile of environmental species is particularly relevant since genetic determinants of resistance can spread through horizontal gene transfer and reach clinically ...

Acidophilic Planctomycetes: Expanding the Horizons of New Planctomycete Diversity

2013
As evidenced by the results of cultivation-independent studies, members of the bacterial phylum Planctomycetes colonize various acidic environments including soils, hot springs, and wetlands. Until recently, however, acidophilic planctomycetes were absent from the public culture collections as well as from the list of taxonomically described bacteria ...

INTRACELLULAR COMPARTMENTATION IN PLANCTOMYCETES

Annual Review of Microbiology, 2005
The phylum Planctomycetes of the domain Bacteria consists of budding, peptidoglycan-less organisms important for understanding the origins of complex cell organization. Their significance for cell biology lies in their possession of intracellular membrane compartmentation.

Complete genome sequence of the cellulolytic planctomycete Telmatocola sphagniphila SP2T and characterization of the first cellulolytic enzyme from planctomycetes

Systematic and Applied Microbiology, 2021
Planctomycetes of the family Gemmataceae are strictly aerobic chemo-organotrophs that display a number of hydrolytic capabilities. A member of this family, Telmatocola sphagniphila SP2T, is the first described planctomycete with experimentally proven ability for growth on cellulose.

Gemmata Species: Planctomycetes of Medical Interest

Future Microbiology, 2016
The Planctomycetes genus Gemmata is represented by both uncultured organisms and cultured Gemmata obscuriglobus and 'Gemmata massiliana' organisms. Their plasmidless 9.2 Mb genomes encode a complex cell plan, cell signaling capacities, antibiotic and trace metal resistance and multidrug resistance efflux pumps.

Understanding the Cell Organization in Planctomycetes

2021
Phylum Planctomycetes are unique, atypical, and distinct of the bacteria species resembling that of eukaryotes. The organisms have unusual features such as cystolic compartmentalization. They also possess characteristics such as endocytosis-like macromolecule uptake.

Phyla Related to Planctomycetes: Members of Phylum Chlamydiae and Their Implications for Planctomycetes Cell Biology

2013
Planctomycetes and Chlamydiae are the best studied phylum members of a recently recognized superphylum, which also includes phyla Verrucomicrobia, Lentisphaerae, and Poribacteria. The phylum Chlamydiae includes established human pathogens such as Chlamydia trachomatis, species of major veterinary and economic importance such as Chlamydia abortus, as ...

History, Classification and Cultivation of the Planctomycetes

2013
The Planctomycetes phylum is a treasure trove of biology even though it is one of the most recently discovered bacterial groups. These organisms comprise one of the most divergent and innovative bacterial groups due to their (contested) phylogeny, complex life cycles, cell structure and metabolism.

Planctomycetes—New Models for Microbial Cells and Activities

2017
Planctomycetes are a unique divergent phylum of the domain Bacteria. Members display a number of unusual properties, such as cell compartmentalization among many species examined electron microscopically, the presence of unusual or unique lipids, such as sterols and ladderane lipids in some species, and unique physiology in some species, such as the ...
