Dual‐Mode Magnetic Elastomer for On‐Demand Motion and Degradation

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A dual‐mode magnetic elastomer is introduced, enabling DC field‐driven programmable actuation and AC field‐driven magnetothermal degradation. GHz‐range magnetic fields generate ultrafast heating of magnetic nanoparticles that activates cleavage of the silicone elastomer matrix.

Capture into Apsidal Resonance and the Decimation of Planets around Inspiraling Binaries

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal Letters
Transiting circumbinary planets (CBPs) are conspicuously rare and entirely absent around stellar binaries with periods ≤7 days. Here we exploit a secular resonance to stimulate the orbit of a CBP into strong, disruptive interactions with the host binary.

Binder Engineering Suppresses Jahn–Teller‐Driven Mn Dissolution and Enables High‐Loading MnO2 Cathodes for Aqueous Zn‐Ion Batteries

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
A Zn2+‐coordinated poly(vinylidene fluoride) binder is shown to suppress Jahn–Teller‐driven Mn dissolution while improving dispersion, wettability, and structural integrity in thick MnO2 cathodes. This simple binder‐engineering strategy enables high‐loading aqueous Zn‐ion batteries with enhanced areal capacity, cycling stability, and practical promise ...

Carving the Edges of the Rocky Planet Population

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal Letters
Short-period planets provide ideal laboratories for testing star–planet interaction. Planets that are smaller than  ∼2 R _⊕ are considered to be largely rocky, either having been stripped of or never having acquired the gaseous envelope.

Detectability of continuous gravitational waves from planetary-mass companions orbiting compact stars

open access: yesAstronomy & Astrophysics
Binary systems with ultrashort-period planetary-mass companions are expected to radiate continuous gravitational waves (GWs). However, earlier studies found that the detectability of such systems by the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) is ...

3D Printing Innovations in Polymeric Porous and Patterned Architecture

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Polymeric foams occupy a unique structural space between dense solids and open networks, where engineered void fraction governs mechanical compliance, thermal resistance, and mass transport. Additive manufacturing now enables precise spatial control over cellular architecture, unlocking designer foam structures across applications spanning crash ...

Atmospheric Escape From Three Terrestrial Planets in the L 98-59 System

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
A critically important process affecting the climate evolution and potential habitability of an exoplanet is atmospheric escape, in which high-energy radiation from a star drives the escape of hydrogen atoms and other light elements from a planet’s ...

In Situ Crystalline‐Amorphous Composite Oxide Structure Suppressing Thermal Wear Instability for Refractory Multi‐Principal Element Alloy

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
An effective strategy is developed to overcome the medium temperatures wear resistance degradation in refractory multi‐principal element alloys. By utilizing chemical short‐range ordering to trigger oxygen‐induced amorphization, a composite oxide structure is formed, which combines high hardness with robust stiffness.

Tidal Migration of Exoplanets around M Dwarfs: Frequency-dependent Tidal Dissipation

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
The orbital architectures of short-period exoplanet systems are shaped by tidal dissipation in their host stars. For low-mass M dwarfs whose dynamical tidal response comprises a dense spectrum of inertial modes at low frequencies, resolving the frequency

Magnetic‐Field Control of Surface States in CoFe2O4 Thin Films for Nitrate Electroreduction to Ammonia

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Magnetic‐field‐assisted CVD of heterometallic single‐source precursors modulates thin‐film surface electronic structure and interfacial charge transfer. Field‐grown (Cobalt ferrite‐1T)CF‐1T films exhibit stabilized electronic states, lower kinetic barriers, and markedly enhanced nitrate‐to‐ammonia electrocatalysis versus (Cobalt ferrite‐0T) CF‐0T ...
