Increased insolation threshold for runaway greenhouse processes on Earth like planets

open access: yes, 2013
Because the solar luminosity increases over geological timescales, Earth climate is expected to warm, increasing water evaporation which, in turn, enhances the atmospheric greenhouse effect.

Potential effects of environmental change on mining wastes in a hyperarid climate [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
Three desert washes were sampled to evaluate the transport of contaminated sediments from abandoned mining sites to downwash environments. The area of concern is an extreme arid climate considered stable and not to pose pathways for contaminated ...

“Active Planetary Cover” Concept and Long-Term Evolution of Planetary Climate [PDF]

open access: yes, 2003
At the beginning of XIX. century J.-B. Lamarque had introduced the term “biosphere”. In accordance with his definition the biosphere is a “scope of life” and it is an external cover for the Earth. In 1875 E. Suss, who also distinguished the biosphere as one of the Earth covers, introduced the same term in geology. But V.

Optimal Grazing Exclusion Duration to Enhance Soil Carbon Sequestration in Degraded Grasslands

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Across China, grazing exclusion reaches the national mean soil organic carbon recovery benchmark sooner in high‐MAP regions (> 500 mm), but recovery is much slower where MAP < 300 mm. Scaling this strategy to 70% of China's degraded grasslands would sequester about 1.52 Pg of soil carbon over 10 years—roughly 17% of annual global fossil‐fuel emissions.

Impact of Annually Variable Dust Activity on the Recession of the Martian South Polar Seasonal Cap

open access: yesThe Astronomical Journal
Suspended dust is a vital component of Martian climatic system and its temporal-spatial variation can influence the recession of the South Polar Seasonal Cap (SPSC).

Linking Plant Metabolomics with Fungal Functional Dynamics Reveals a Noncanonical S‐R‐C Adaptive Trajectory

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Using field‐based holo‐omics, we demonstrate that developmental shifts in sorghum leaf metabolomes drive a noncanonical fungal succession from stress tolerators (S) through ruderals (R) to competitors (C). Antifungal metabolites in young leaves select for S strategists with expanded genomes, transient maltose pulses during flowering favor fast‐growing ...

Snowball Bistability Vanishes at Moderate Orbital Eccentricity

open access: yesThe Planetary Science Journal
Snowball episodes are associated with increases in atmospheric oxygen and the complexity of life on Earth, and they may be essential for the development of complex life on exoplanets. Sustained, stable Snowball episodes require a Snowball bifurcation and

Life‐Cycle Assessment of Printed Electronic Components ‐ Case Study for Organic Electrochemical Transistors

open access: yesAdvanced Electronic Materials, EarlyView.
This tutorial introduces a practical framework for implementing early‐stage Life‐Cycle Assessment (LCA) in flexible and printed electronics. Using organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) as a case study, the modular Process‐of‐Record and open‐access inventory provides a rich resource adaptable to a plethora of technologies in printed electronics ...

Markets Mitigate Land‐Use Competition From Energy Crops and Increase Farm Revenues

open access: yesApplied Economic Perspectives and Policy, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Meeting the US Sustainable Aviation Fuel Grand Challenge target of 35 billion gal annually by 2050 will require an estimated 380 million–700 million dry tons of agricultural biomass feedstock. This study evaluates the implications of large‐scale biomass production for land use, crop production, and market outcomes under mature market ...
