Development of a Magnetic Planetary Gearbox

IEEE Transactions on Magnetics, 2008
In this paper, we describe a new design for a magnetic planetary gearbox. We discuss the theory of operation and a simulated design. We constructed and verified the simulation by measuring the transmitted torque and cogging torque. A magnetic planetary gearbox operates like a mechanical planetary gearbox, except that it is contact-free and needs no ...

Design and analysis of the bearingless planetary gearbox

2017 IEEE/RSJ International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems (IROS), 2017
High performance legged and mobile manipulating robotic platforms require light weight actuators with high torque density, efficiency, and accuracy. This paper introduces a new type of high reduction bearingless gearbox which is based on a gearbox with double-row planetary pinion, and can achieve high reduction ratios in a single composite stage.

Dynamic Simulation of Planetary Gearbox

Key Engineering Materials, 2013
Planetary gears are the most popular transmission machinery in large reduction ratio circumstances, which is because of the advantages of compactness, co-axial and high power efficiency. Accurate dynamic model is crucial when planetary gears are used in precise positioning and controlling systems.

Hybrid Diagnostics and Prognostics of Planetary Gearboxes

2021
The effective condition monitoring of planetary gearboxes is important for making informed maintenance decisions and minimizing machine downtime. Traditional physics-based and data-driven approaches for condition monitoring of planetary gearboxes have inherent shortcomings that limit their practical application for remaining useful life prediction ...

Effect of Redundant Rollers in Planetary Gearbox

Mechanism and Machine Theory
Mechanical transmission losses account for a significant portion of energy dissipation in electromechanical actuators. These actuators generally use a combination of high-speed electrical motors with a high-ratio gearbox. For such high-ratio gear transmission, even minor deviations in meshing can lead to substantial power loss.

An Experimental Characterization of a Planetary Gearbox

2018
This paper present an experimental characterization of a planetary gearbox designed at LARM. A new test bed, which consist of an AC motor coupled to the gearbox to drive a mechanical load, was worked out in order to analyze the differential operation stage of the planetary gearbox by means of setting a varying load.

Impact of Shaft Misalignments in Planetary Gearboxes

Volume 11: 2023 International Power Transmission and Gearing Conference (PTG), 2023
Abstract Planetary gear sets have a more complex structure than layshaft gearboxes which leads to challenges in design, analysis and operation. In this paper, design critical phenomena in planetary gear sets are addressed and latest test bench findings are presented. These focus on the impact of carrier shaft and planet pin misalignments

An improved phenomenological model of vibrations for planetary gearboxes

Journal of Sound and Vibration, 2021
Abstract Interpreting and understanding vibration characteristics are the cornerstone for health condition monitoring schemes of a planetary gearbox. Phenomenological modeling provides a concise and efficient mathematical description of sensor-related vibration measurements, thus allowing prior guidance for spectrum analysis to be relied on.

Design and Manufacture of a Planetary Gearbox Rig

Applied Mechanics and Materials, 2013
Planetary gearboxes are required in many applications but have a high failure rate especially in wind turbines where rapid growth in turbine size is placing larger demands on the gearboxes. Current condition monitoring techniques are less effective at detecting faults in planetary gearboxes due to the complexity of the internal rotating components.
