Thermal Studies of Planetary Surfaces [PDF]

open access: yesSymposium - International Astronomical Union, 1981
Ground-based and spacecraft observations of planets, satellites, and asteroids in the thermal infrared have provided a wealth of information on planetary temperatures, dimensions, and surface properties. Internal heat sources have been revealed for Jupiter, Saturn, and Neptune, and active volcanism on Io has been discovered and monitored.

Optical Constants of Martian Dust Analogs at UV–Visible–Near-infrared Wavelengths

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal Supplement Series, 2023
We present an advanced light-scattering model to retrieve the optical constants of three Martian dust analogs: Johnson Space Center regolith simulant, Enhanced Mojave Mars Simulant, and Mars Global Simulant.

Hybrid Animism: The Sensing Surfaces Of Planetary Computation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2022
This article proposes to examine animism through the perspective provided by a notion of immanent matter drawn on process philosophy (Spinoza, Deleuze and Guattari), and quantum physics (Bohm, Rovelli).

Polarimetry of Water Ice Particles Providing Insights on Grain Size and Degree of Sintering on Icy Planetary Surfaces [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
The polarimetry of the light scattered by planetary surfaces is a powerful tool to provide constraints on their microstructure. To improve the interpretation of polarimetric data from icy surfaces, we have developed the POLarimeter for ICE Samples ...

Characterizing Interstellar Medium, Planetary Surface and Deep Environments by Spectroscopic Techniques Using Unique Simulation Chambers at Centro de Astrobiologia (CAB)

open access: yesLife, 2019
At present, the study of diverse habitable environments of astrobiological interest has become a major challenge. Due to the obvious technical and economical limitations on in situ exploration, laboratory simulations are one of the most feasible research

Emplacement of penetrators into planetary surfaces [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Geophysical Research: Planets, 1996
We present experimental data and a model for the low‐velocity (subsonic, 0–1000 m/s) penetration of brittle materials by both solid and hollow (i.e., coring) penetrators. The experiments show that penetration is proportional to momentum/frontal area of the penetrator.

Investigating the Stability and Distribution of Surface Ice in Mercury’s Northernmost Craters

open access: yesThe Planetary Science Journal, 2023
Observations made by Earth-based radar telescopes and the MErcury Surface, Space ENvironment, GEochemistry, and Ranging (MESSENGER) spacecraft provided compelling evidence for water ice in Mercury's polar craters.
