植物工場(1)は「高度環境制御による植物の周年生産システム」と定義されるように,農業に水耕栽培,コンピュータ制御,自動化などのハイテクを導入することによって自然環境にあまり左右されることなく,高生産性を達成しようとする技術である。現在はまだそれほど普及していないが, 21世紀には重要になると考えられている。植物工場には,主に太陽光を光源に使う太陽光利用型と,もっぱら人工光を使う完全制御型とがある。両タイプに対して普及段階に応じて栽培品目を分類したのが表1である。現状では太陽光利用型の方が実用化が進んでいる。この太陽光利用型は広く解釈すれば従来の水耕栽培を含むものであるが,特に冷房,補光,自動化など導入した高度システムを特に植物工場という場合が多い。我が国では企業を中心に植物工場の研究開発が盛んである。
