Plant invasions in South Africa: Insights from the 2017 National Status Report on Biological Invasions [PDF]

open access: yes, 2018
The impacts of biological invasions are increasing and are felt by all sectors of society. The Department of Environmental Affairs currently invests over R1.5 billion a year on managing biological invasions, mostly on alien plant control. In this talk we

Riparian plant invasions: Hydrogeomorphological control and ecological impacts

open access: yes, 2001
Biological invasions are a threat to ecosystems across all biogeographical realms. Riparian habitats are considered to be particularly prone to invasion by alien plant species and, because riparian vegetation plays a key role in both aquatic and ...

UiO‐66 metal–organic frameworks in biomedicine: From structural tunability to bioimaging, photodiagnostics, and photodynamic cancer therapy

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
UiO‐66(Zr) metal–organic frameworks are chemically stable, biocompatible, and highly tunable nanomaterials. Their modular structure enables controlled drug delivery, multimodal bioimaging, and light‐activated photodynamic therapy, supporting integrated diagnostic and therapeutic (theranostic) applications in cancer and biomedical research.

Aquaporin‐3 and aquaporin‐5 impact the development of pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma spheroids

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Schematic representation of the role of aquaporin‐3 (AQP3) and aquaporin‐5 (AQP5) in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC). Both proteins are upregulated in PDAC and are associated with tumor progression and metastatic potential. Silencing AQP3 or AQP5 in PDAC spheroids results in decreased diameter, area, and overall growth, underscoring their key ...

Molecular characterization of covRS mutations in M1UK Streptococcus pyogenes

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Group A Streptococcus (GAS) acquires covRS mutations driving a hypervirulent bacterial state, frequently associated with invasive disease‐like necrotizing fasciitis. We demonstrate that the newly emerged M1UK GAS lineage can also acquire these mutations.

Plant invasions research in Latin America: fast track to a more focused agenda

open access: yes, 2016
Fundação de Amparo à Pesquisa do Estado de São Paulo (FAPESP)While many developed countries have invested heavily in research on plant invasions over the last 50 years, the immense region of Latin America has made little progress.

Contrasting responses of soil organic and inorganic carbon pools under plant invasion in tropical coral islands

open access: yesBiological Diversity
Plant invasions pose significant threats to biodiversity and ecosystem functioning, but their impact on soil carbon (C) pools in island ecosystems remains underexplored. This study examined the responses of soil total C (TC), organic C (SOC), inorganic C

Loss of AMBRA1 activates MAPK and angiogenesis signaling pathways in melanoma cells

open access: yesFEBS Open Bio, EarlyView.
Loss of AMBRA1 in melanoma cells activates multiple oncogenic pathways associated with tumor progression. Transcriptomic and protein network analyses revealed that AMBRA1 depletion enhances MAPK/ERK signaling, angiogenesis, TGF‐β/EMT signaling, and Wnt/axon guidance pathways.
