Lectins and lectin-like molecules in lower plants — II. Freshwater algae
Developmental & Comparative Immunology, 1985Freshwater chlamydomonad algae possess flagella surface isoagglutinins of a glycoprotein nature which are involved in gamete recognition and consequent cell fusion. Alternatively, such molecules may have a receptor role in certain Chlamydomonas species. In some freshwater volvocaines, lectin-like substances act as inducers of sexuality.

Lectins are carbohydrate-binding proteins of nonimmune origin which occur throughout the biosphere (Goldstein and Poretz 1986). Their most obvious property, hemagglutination, has been known for more than a century (Franz 1988), whereas the art of purifying lectins is much younger.

[Ribosome-inactivating lectins from plants].
Molekuliarnaia biologiia, 2006There is a heterogeneous group of plant proteins which are able to enzymatically inactivate ribosomes by depurination of an invariant adenine from the 28 S ribosomal RNA. Some of these proteins are heterodimers having a lectin subunit which is joined by disulfide bond to the enzymatic subunit.

[Lectins, sugar-binding plant proteins].
Die Naturwissenschaften, 1978Lectins are proteins which can bind to the surfaces of animal and human cells. They are widespread in the plant and animal kingdom. Though many lectins have been isolated and characterized, and though some are extensively used as cell surface "tools", their biological role is only subject to hypotheses.
