Beyond plant genetics: microbiome-enhancing heterosis in plants
Trends in Plant SciencePlant heterosis has been recognized as being primarily dependent on the genetics of contrasting parents. However, in recent work, Liu et al. describe 'endophytic microbiome-induced heterosis', showing distinct and diverse seed microbiomes in hybrids, which boosted seed germination compared with their parents.
