Hematopoietic (stem) cells—The elixir of life?
The aging of HSCs (hematopoietic stem cells) and the blood system leads to the decline of other organs. Rejuvenating aged HSCs improves the function of the blood system, slowing the aging of the heart, kidney, brain, and liver, and the occurrence of age‐related diseases.

The cost of phage resistance in a plant pathogenic bacterium is context-dependent. [PDF]
Parasites are ubiquitous features of living systems and many parasites severely reduce the fecundity or longevity of their hosts. This parasite-imposed selection on host populations should strongly favor the evolution of host resistance, but hosts ...

Impact of hormonal crosstalk on plant resistance and fitness under multi-attacker conditions
The hormone salicylic acid (SA) generally induces plant defenses against biotrophic pathogens. Jasmonic acid (JA) and its oxylipin derivatives together with ethylene (ET) are generally important hormonal regulators of induced plant defenses against ...

This study challenges the idea that Sit4‐associated protein subunit 3 (SAPS3) inhibits the energy‐sensing enzyme AMP‐activated protein kinase (AMPK) in muscle and liver tissue. Although SAPS3 interacts with AMPK in cultured cells, we found no such interaction in human or mouse tissues subjected to fasting, exercise, or a high‐fat diet.

PARP‐1 is a key enzyme in the DNA damage response, and its inhibition induces cancer cell death via synthetic lethality. Au(I)‐based drugs, such as aurothioglucose and sodium aurothiomalate, block PARP‐1's DNA‐dependent activity by targeting its zinc finger domains.

Molecular bases of circadian magnesium rhythms across eukaryotes
Circadian rhythms in intracellular [Mg2+] exist across eukaryotic kingdoms. Central roles for Mg2+ in metabolism suggest that Mg2+ rhythms could regulate daily cellular energy and metabolism. In this Perspective paper, we propose that ancestral prokaryotic transport proteins could be responsible for mediating Mg2+ rhythms and posit a feedback model ...

Screening strawberry plant resistance to Phytophthora cactorum with two techniques [PDF]
P. cactorum infects runner plants in the NFT system fairly quickly, the first symptoms becoming visible in three to five days in susceptible cultivars.

Identification and mapping of the novel apple scab resistance gene Vd3 [PDF]
Apple scab, caused by the fungal pathogen Venturia inaequalis, is one of the most devastating diseases for the apple growing in temperate zones with humid springs and summers.

High-throughput phenotyping of plant resistance to aphids by automated video tracking
BackgroundPiercing-sucking insects are major vectors of plant viruses causing significant yield losses in crops. Functional genomics of plant resistance to these insects would greatly benefit from the availability of high-throughput, quantitative ...
