A brief review of current data on the molecular biology of stem cells forming meristems and differentiating into various organs of angiosperms is presented. Different primary and secondary meristems are compared. The interactions of some hormones, regulatory gene networks, and signaling pathways in different types of meristems are described.

PHOTOMORPHOGENESIS IN PLANT STEMS
Biological Reviews, 1964SummaryThe large morphological differences between plants grown in the dark and those exposed to light appear to result from an effect of light on accelerating the developmental process and causing it to proceed further. Light accelerates the early phase of expansion of stems but inhibits their final growth in length. At least two photochemical ...

Annual Review of Plant Biology, 2012
Multicellular organisms possess pluripotent stem cells to form new organs, replenish the daily loss of cells, or regenerate organs after injury. Stem cells are maintained in specific environments, the stem cell niches, that provide signals to block differentiation.

Plant stem cells (PSC) have been extensively studied by many research laboratories across the globe in the last decade highlighting their regenerative potential, cellular function, and regulatory mechanisms. PSC reveal the hallmark characteristic of self-renewal and developmental plasticity leading to the development of different cell identities and ...

[On plant stem cells and animal stem cells].
Zhongguo Zhong yao za zhi = Zhongguo zhongyao zazhi = China journal of Chinese materia medica, 2014A comparison of plant and animal stem cells can highlight core aspects of stem-cell biology. In both kingdoms, stem cells are defined by their clonogenic properties and are maintained by intercellular signals. The signaling molecules are different in plants and animals stem cell niches, but the roles of argonaute and polycomb group proteins suggest ...

Stem turnover strategy of multiple‐stemmed woody plants
Ecological Research, 2006Abstract We have investigated stem turnover strategy for Lindera umbellata , an understory shrub that sprouts from its rootstock under natural conditions to replace constituent stems, on the basis of the hypothesis that the multiple‐stemmed form of woody species is an ...

The dynamic plant stem cell niches
Current Opinion in Plant Biology, 2007Stem cells exist in specific locations called niches, where extracellular signals maintain stem cell division and prevent differentiation. In plants, the best characterised niches are within the shoot and root meristems. Networks of regulatory genes and intercellular signals maintain meristem structure in spite of constant cell displacement by division.

Antiviral defense in plant stem cells
Trends in Plant ScienceUndifferentiated plant and animal stem cells are essential for cell, tissue, and organ differentiation, development, and growth. They possess unusual antiviral immunity which differs from that in specialized cells. By comparison to animal stem cells, we discuss how plant stem cells defend against viral invasion and beyond.

Stem Cell Signalling Networks in Plants
Plant Molecular Biology, 2006The essential nature of meristematic tissues is addressed with reference to conceptual frameworks that have been developed to explain the behaviour of animal stem cells. Comparisons are made between different types of plant meristems with the objective of highlighting common themes that might illuminate underlying mechanisms. A more in depth comparison
