Divergent hydrological responses to restoration between planted and natural forests basins in drylands

open access: yesJournal of Hydrology: Regional Studies
Study region: Semi-arid and arid regions Study focus: Afforestation in global arid and semi-arid regions has expanded over the past two decades, largely driven by carbon-sequestration initiatives, but these activities consume substantial water and may ...

Earthworm Communities in Natural and Reforestation Areas of the Hyrcanian Forest; A Conservation Approach [PDF]

open access: yesمحیط زیست و توسعه فرابخشی
Introduction: The Caspian Hyrcanian forests are a habitat with ancient growth of temperate broadleaf trees that spread along the Alborz Mountain range's northern slopes and near the southern borders of the Caspian Sea.

High‐Performance Bio‐Glue From the Berries of a Parasitic Plant

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
We report a fully bio‐based adhesive derived primarily from a (poly)saccharide extract obtained from the berries of the hemi‐parasitic plant mistletoe (Viscum album), supplemented with tannic and malic acid without any further chemical functionalization.

Comparison of UAV-LiDAR-driven biomass estimation approaches in planted forests with different management

open access: yesInternational Journal of Digital Earth
Planted forests play a crucial role in forest restoration and carbon sequestration. However, different management practices in planted forests can alter forest structure and composition, potentially affecting UAV-LiDAR-based biomass estimation.

Sustainable and Multifunctional Natural Macromolecular Polymers for Aqueous Zn Metal Batteries

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
We comprehensively review the structure‐function relationships and regulatory mechanism of natural macromolecular polymers in stabilizing zinc anodes at the microscopic and mesoscopic scales. The interactions among polymer structures, optimization strategies, and regulatory mechanisms are discussed systematically summarizing recent related research ...

Integration of Landsat–Sentinel Time Series and Flowering Phenology for Mapping Planted Forests and Distinguishing Tree Crops

open access: yesRemote Sensing
Planted forests are increasingly promoted to meet rising demand for forest products and restore degraded lands, but their extent and ecological implications are often misrepresented because tree crops (e.g., orchards, plantation agriculture) exhibit ...

Soil animal communities of planted birch stands in central Finland

open access: yesSilva Fennica, 2005
The aim of this study was to compare soil animal communities in planted birch (Betula pendula) stands of different origin with each other and with natural forests.

Flax Composites With Improved Interfacial Strength Through Microbially Induced Mineral Precipitation

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
A bio‐inspired biomineralization strategy introduces an additional hierarchy to flax fiber composites. By controlling microbe‐mediated mineral particle deposition through tuned salt concentrations, stress transfer within the natural fiber composite is enhanced.

Planting the seeds for a forest of RNAi pathways

open access: yesPLOS Biology, 2023
Cells from most eukaryotic species make several different types of small interfering RNAs. Pioneering work in plants, published in PLOS Biology almost 20 years ago, established a framework to understand how multiple RNA interference pathways can regulate the genome in parallel.
