Synergistic laser-wakefield and direct-laser acceleration in the plasma-bubble regime. [PDF]

open access: yesPhysical Review Letters, 2014
The concept of a hybrid laser plasma accelerator is proposed. Relativistic electrons undergoing resonant betatron oscillations inside the plasma bubble created by a laser pulse are accelerated by gaining energy directly from the laser pulse and from its ...

Designing Vanadium‐Based Oxide Electrocatalysts for Water Splitting: Experimental and Mechanistic Insights with Machine Learning

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This review establishes structure‐property‐mechanism relationships across six modification strategies for V‐based oxide water‐splitting electrocatalysts: lattice engineering, heteroatom doping, interface engineering, carbon‐based hybridization, morphology engineering, and surface reconstruction and pre‐catalyst design, where dissolution is reframed as ...

Bubble-Bubble Interaction in the Quark-Gluon Plasma

open access: yes, 1993
We calculate the two-body interaction of spherical hadronic bubbles immersed in a gluon plasma at temperatures above the phase transition. Modeling the bubbles with the MIT bag we find that the two body potential is repulsive for all bubble-bubble distances considered.

Self‐Assembled Crystalline Peptoid Nanomaterials as Metal‐Free Enzyme Mimics for Enhanced Carbon Dioxide Hydration and Precipitation

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Inspired by metal‐free carbonic anhydrases (CAs) that achieve efficient catalysis without metal cofactors, we herein report a sequence‐defined supramolecular peptoid platform that mimics metal‐free CAs and exhibits hydrolytic activity via a supramolecular assembly‐mediated proton‐transfer mechanism.

Engineered Microvascular Model of the Blood–Brain–Tumor Barrier Reveals Endothelial Remodeling in Diffuse Midline Glioma

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
We developed a patient‐derived, functional microfluidic model of the diffuse midline glioma (DMG) blood–brain–tumor barrier (BBTB) comprised of endothelial cells, astrocytes, pericytes, and tumor cells. The system forms perfusable microvasculature, reveals the BBTB retains vascular integrity, identifies DMG‐specific transcriptomic changes distinct from

Deviations from model predictions in measured electron density profiles for low latitudes: A critique [PDF]

open access: yesGeofísica Internacional, 2004
In situ electron density profiles obtained from equatorial stations in Brazil using conventional Langmuir probes and High Frequency Capacitance probes are compared with IRI predictions in the light of the spectral distribution of the plasma density ...

Measuring temperature effects on nano-bubble growth in tungsten with grazing incidence small angle X-ray scattering

open access: yesNuclear Materials and Energy, 2017
W samples were exposed to He plasma in the MAGPIE, NAGDIS-II and PISCES-A across a range of sample temperatures between 473–1123K. GISAXS was used to quantify the effect of plasma fluence and W surface temperature on He nano-bubble size distributions. In

Theoretical Model of Helium Bubble Growth and Density in Plasma-Facing Metals

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2020
We present a theoretically-motivated model of helium bubble density as a function of volume for high-pressure helium bubbles in plasma-facing tungsten. The model is a good match to the empirical correlation we published previously [Hammond et al., Acta ...

Photovoltaic Stimulation of Mouse and Pig Retina With Pyrolytic Carbon Microelectrodes Integrated on High‐Density Silicon Solar Cell Arrays

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
In this study, we fabricate photovoltaic retinal implants with pyrolytic carbon electrodes and test their ability to stimulate mouse and pig retinas when illuminated with near‐infrared light. We find increased spiking activity in both animal models compared to spontaneous activity and TTX controls and analyze the spike amplitude, latency and frequency.
