Tailored aluminium oxide layers by bipolar current adjustment in the Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation (PEO) process

Surface and Coatings Technology, 2007
The plasma electrolytic oxidation process of aluminium alloys is investigated for two different current waveforms. It is shown that particular conditions may be established which strongly reduce the arcing that usually cause detrimental defects in the oxide layer for treatment time greater than typically 40–50 min.

Developments in plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) coatings for biodegradable magnesium alloys

Materials Today: Proceedings, 2021
Abstract Magnesium (Mg) alloys are widely used in bioapplications due to its biodegradable nature, suitable biological and mechanical properties. Also, Mg has a low density (ρ = 1.74 g /cm3) and its elastic modulus (EM = 45 GPa) is much closer to the human bone as compared with other high moduli metallic implants such as Stainless Steels (SS), Cobalt-

A novel titanium implant surface modification by plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) preventing tendon adhesion

Materials Science and Engineering: C, 2021
Titanium is one of the most commonly used materials for implants in trauma applications due to its low density, high corrosion resistance and biocompatibility. Nevertheless, there is still a need for improved surface modifications of Titanium, in order to change surface properties such as wettability, antibacterial properties or tissue attachment.

Spectroscopic study of electrolytic plasma and discharging behaviour during the plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) process

Journal of Physics D: Applied Physics, 2010
In this study, a plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) process was used to produce oxide coatings on commercially pure aluminium (1100 alloy) at a pulsed dc power mode. The effects of process parameters (i.e. current density and treatment time) on the plasma discharge behaviour during the PEO treatment were investigated using optical emission ...

Development of thermal control coatings on AA7075 by plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) process

Materials Today: Proceedings, 2021
Abstract The thermal control coating was produced on AA7075 by pulsed DC plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) process in an aqueous electrolyte containing 3 g/l sodium silicate (Na2SiO3) and 6 g/l potassium hydroxide (KOH) along with 4 g/l nanoparticles of Cupric oxide (CuO) or Titanium oxide (TiO2) or CuO and TiO2 with equal mass.

Current density effects on plasma emission during plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) on AZ91D-magnesium alloy

Modern Physics Letters B, 2020
The effect of bipolar pulse mode current ratio (anodic to cathodic) on plasma emission behavior was investigated in Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation (PEO) on AZ91D Mg-Alloy. Two cases of current ratio as 1.20 and 0.88 were applied to the sample. Plasma emission behavior was studied using plasma images and plasma emission measured by photodetector and ...

A review on plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) of niobium: Mechanism, properties and applications

Surfaces and Interfaces, 2020
Abstract According to the PEO coatings remarkable properties, this surface process is extensively used in order to modify the surface and improve the properties of valve metals and their alloys. However, few articles about PEO treatment on niobium have been published. This study reviews effects of electrolyte composition and different voltages on the

Cell adhesion to plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) titania coatings, assessed using a centrifuging technique

Journal of the Mechanical Behavior of Biomedical Materials, 2011
The adhesion of bovine chondrocytes and human osteoblasts to three titania-based coatings, formed by plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO), was compared to that on uncoated Ti-6Al-4V substrates, and some comparisons were also made with plasma sprayed hydroxyapatite (HA) coatings. This was done using a centrifuge, with accelerations of up to 160,000 g, so

Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation (PEO) Coatings on Aluminum Alloys: Kinetics and Formation Mechanism

2019
In this review, the main kinetics and mechanism regularities of plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) of aluminum alloys are discussed. The material and heat balances of the PEO process, including anomalous gas evolution and possible thermochemical reactions are presented for the first time.

An investigation of microstructure evolution for plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) coated Al in an alkaline silicate electrolyte

Surface and Coatings Technology, 2018
Abstract In the current investigation, plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) ceramic coatings on Al are galvanostatically synthesized at various processing stages in an alkaline silicate system. The resultant coatings are systematically surveyed in terms of the following respects: the applied voltage and surface sparking evolution over the studied ...
