Complications of Plasma-exchange

The International Journal of Artificial Organs, 1993
Complications in apheresis affect on the average 40% of treated patients and 10-14% of the procedures. The mortality rate is 1/500 treated patients. The utilization of more complex techniques, central catheters, plasma infusion and even more the superimposition of different factors increase the incidence and gravity of side effects. Very influent are

Plasma Exchange in Radiculopolyneuropathies

The International Journal of Artificial Organs, 1984
The AA. report the results obtained with Plasma Exchange (P.E.) therapy on 24 cases of polyradiculoneuritis; eleven patients had typical Guillain-Barré Syndrome (G.B.S.) ten suffered from a chronic progressive form and three were affected by a relapsing form.

Selective plasma exchange

Transfusion and Apheresis Science, 2017
Selective plasma exchange (SePE) is a new modality of simple plasma exchange that uses a selective membrane plasma separator Evacure EC-4A10 (EC-4A) (Kawasumi Laboratories Inc., Tokyo, Japan). EC-4A has a relatively small pore size of 0.03μm, which is around one-tenth that of conventional plasma separators.

Complications of plasma exchange

Transfusion, 1989
For the past few years, the Canadian Apheresis Study Group has collected data on most apheresis procedures carried out throughout the country. The information accumulated during calendar year 1985 has been reviewed, and the complications that occurred as a result of therapeutic plasma exchange (PE) have been assessed. There were side effects during 612

Plasma exchanges in psoriasis

Clinical and Experimental Dermatology, 1984
Summary Five patients with resistant psoriasis were treated with plasma exchanges performed ten times over a 4-week period. Improvement was noted after three exchanges in all five. One patient with erythrodermic psoriasis became paler but relapsed 2 days after treatment. Improvement in four patients was of short duration with relapses occurring in 2

Kinetics modeling of plasma exchange: Intra- and post-plasma exchange

Plasma Therapy and Transfusion Technology, 1987
Patient response to plasma exchange is variable. Clinical experience indicates that the outcome depends on the size of the exchange relative to the patient's plasma volume, the amount of material available for removal in both the intravascular and extravascular pools, and the mobility of the material between the pools.

Plasma Exchange in Elderly Patients

Therapeutic Apheresis and Dialysis, 2010
AbstractPlasma exchange (PE) is an extracorporeal blood purification technique designed for the removal of large molecular weight substances from plasma. Data regarding the use of PE in elderly patients is lacking, so this study analyzes the database of the Department of Dialysis at the University Hospital Center Zagreb (634 patients, 6237 procedures ...

Immunoadsorption or plasma exchange in steroid‐refractory multiple sclerosis and neuromyelitis optica

Journal of clinical apheresis, 2019
Plasma exchange (PE) and immunoadsorption (IA) are alternative treatments of steroid‐refractory relapses of multiple sclerosis (MS) or neuromyelitis optica (NMO).

The Complications of Therapeutic Plasma Exchange

Vox Sanguinis, 1984
AbstractWe reviewed a series of 181 patients who were treated with therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) a total of 1,389 times. Complications were associated with 22 (1.6%) of the procedures and involved 20 (11%) of the patients. Six of the complications were of a technical nature and did not affect the medical conditions of the patients.

Plasma exchange in neurological disease

Practical Neurology, 2019
Plasma exchange is a highly efficient technique to remove circulating autoantibodies and other humoral factors rapidly from the vascular compartment. It was the first effective acute treatment for peripheral disorders such as Guillain-Barré syndrome and ...
