Strain Field Around Individual Dislocations Controls Failure. [PDF]
By conducting in situ transmission electron microscopy strain mapping during a nanoscale fracture experiment, the dislocation processes taking place at the crack tip in the rather brittle metal chromium is detailed. Moreover, for the first time, the local stress fields of the dislocations shielding the crack is directly measured. Abstract Understanding

On the relationship between J-integral and CTOD for CT and SENB specimens
In this investigation the relationship between J-integral and CTOD is studied considering a Compact Tensile (CT) and Single edge notched bend (SENB) specimens using finite element analysis.

This work is a numerical study of CT specimens with straight cracks and different thickness values submitted to different load levels, which aims to analyse the shape and dimension variations of the monotonic yielded area near the crack tip, examining the impact of variables such as load magnitude, thickness of the specimen and position along the crack

Abstract The current work investigates the relationship between the crack growth rate (CGR) and the cyclic crack‐tip opening displacement (ΔCTOD) of microstructurally small fatigue cracks by using high‐resolution digital image correlation (DIC). Load‐controlled fatigue tests were conducted on small‐scale specimens of 18%Cr body‐centered cubic ferritic ...

Fatigue fracture surface analysis in C45 steel specimens using X-Ray fractography [PDF]
X-Ray fractography is a useful technique to analyse the mechanisms operating in fracture and involves an examination of the fracture surface. In the present investigation, this technique has been employed to study the fatigue fracture behaviour of a ...

Abstract The effects of mechanical and microstructural anisotropy on short fatigue crack initiation and propagation behaviors of a directionally solidified superalloy have been studied. An unusual result was found where the fatigue lives of specimens with grains longitudinally aligned along the loading direction fail at lower lifetimes than specimens ...

Plastic CTOD as fatigue crack growth characterising parameter in 2024‐T3 and 7050‐T6 aluminium alloys using DIC [PDF]
AbstractThe plastic range of crack tip opening displacement (CTOD) has been used for the experimental characterisation of fatigue crack growth for 2024‐T3 and 7050‐T6 aluminium alloys using digital image correlation (DIC). Analysis of a complete loading cycle allowed resolving the CTOD into elastic and plastic components.

Dislocation toughening in single‐crystal KNbO3
Abstract The growing research interest in dislocation‐tuned functionality in ceramics is evident, with the most recent proofs‐of‐concept for enhanced ferroelectric properties, electrical conductivity, and superconductivity via dislocations. In this work, we focus on dislocation‐tuned mechanical properties and demonstrate that, by engineering high ...
