New fatigue crack growth law for 316L stainless steel based on plastic CTOD.
This thesis is concerned with a new low for describing the fatigue crack propagation on a 316L steel (austenitic stainless steel). A new methodology is presented based on the plastic contribution of the Crack-Tip Opening Displacement (CTODp). The CTODp is estimated from full-field displacement data measured with Digital Image Correlation (DIC).

Dugdale plastic zone size and CTOD equations for the compact specimen
International Journal of Fracture, 1984With the aim of applying the Dugdale model to the compact specimen, the equations for stress intensity factor and crack surface displacement are obtained for a pair of pin loads and a uniform stress acting on a segment of the crack surface. The plastic zone size is calculated from the 'finiteness' condition of Dugdale, and the results agree well with ...

Fatigue crack growth versus plastic CTOD in the 304L stainless steel
Engineering Fracture Mechanics, 2019Abstract The plastic CTOD range, δp, which quantifies crack tip plastic deformation, is used to study fatigue crack propagation instead of the classical ΔK elastic parameter. A da/dN-δp model was defined for the 304L stainless steel. da/dN was obtained experimentally in standard CT specimens while δp was predicted numerically using the finite element

A difficulty associated with predicting structural integrity is that the surface cracks found in structural components are three-dimensional whereas the crack-tip opening displacement (CTOD) and J-integral analytical techniques were derived from two-dimensional theory.

Abstract The plastic strain accumulation at the crack tips are used as controlling parameter to estimate cyclic CTOD for low-cycle failure analysis of the central-through cracked plate. The second order polynomial for the normalized CTOD defined as a function of the accumulative plastic strain, the ratio of mean stress to the yield stress, and the ...

Specimen Thickness Effects for Elastic-Plastic CTOD Toughness of an A36 Steel
1988This paper describes the results of an experimental and analytical study of the effect of specimen size on the fracture toughness behavior of A36 steel, primarily in the lower-transition region. This region is beyond the limits of plane strain as defined by ASTM Method E 399, but in the region where failure occurs prior to any macroscopic fibrous ...
