Plastic Optical Fibers for Sensing Applications

Optical Fiber Communication Conference, 2014
We review recent developments in polymer optical fiber sensor technology and how such ‘POF’ sensors may extend the capabilities of the existing silica fiber sensors.

Plastic Fiber Optics

SAE Technical Paper Series, 1967
<div class="htmlview paragraph">Plastic fiber optics have been developed which possess excellent light transmission characteristics. The basic theory which explains this phenomenon of light transmission through plastic fibers and certain physical properties which characterize the utility of Crofon plastic fiber optics are discussed.

Bidirectional optical coupler for plastic optical fibers

Applied Optics, 2005
We have developed a low-loss bidirectional optical coupler for high-speed optical communication with plastic optical fibers (POFs). The coupler, which is fabricated by an injection molding method that uses poly (methyl methacrylate), has an antisymmetric tapered shape. We show that the coupler has low insertion and branching losses.

Plastic optical fiber star coupler

Applied Optics, 1986
A new plastic optical fiber star coupler and the means of fabricating it have been developed. This coupler has been realized by twisting and pulling the waist region of a biconical tapered fiber bundle made by pretapered fibers while heating. Controlling the biconical tapered shape has been achieved by jetting gas on the fiber surface while heating the

Development Of Plastic Optical Fiber Devices and Multiple-Core Plastic Optical Fibers

Organic Thin Films for Photonic Applications, 1995
A vast amount of research has been done on optical fibers. Most of the work has been done on Glass optical fibers (GOFs). Much less has been done on Plastic optical fibers (POFs), and very little with regards to applications of nonlinear optics.1 Plastic optical fibers are currently under intense investigation and are used for Local Area Networks (LAN),

Optical filtering in plastic optical fibers

2013 15th International Conference on Transparent Optical Networks (ICTON), 2013
Nowadays, the possibility of the fibre to the home (FTTH) for simultaneous transmission of different services such as internet, telephone, digital television is a reality. However, to meet the more demanding expectations of the end user, it is necessary to improve the physical infrastructure of the existing communication networks in order to obtain the

Plastic optical fibers

SPIE Proceedings, 1996
Characteristics of plastic optical fibers (POF)s, i.e., handling ease because of their good ductility, splicing ease to each other and to light sources because of their large fiber diameter and high numerical aperture, processability, and high flexibility notwithstanding their larger fiber diameters, have attracted much attention.

A novel plastic optical fiber heating furnace for plastic optical fiber drawing tower

2012 2nd International Conference on Consumer Electronics, Communications and Networks (CECNet), 2012
This paper introduces the design of heating furnace with gradient temperature distribution for plastic optical fiber drawing tower. The heating furnace is of cylinder profile, and can be divided into five layers from outside to inside, that is, the shell layer, insulation layer, heating silk layer, buffer layer, and drawing layer.

Plastic optical fiber technology

SPIE Proceedings, 2000
We discuss plastic optical fiber technology in the context of its relationship to glass optical fiber technology. POF technology serves as a low cost way to investigate innovative optical fiber material structures. POFs offer some application advantages, especially in low cost broad bandwidth easily interconnected local area networks.

Advance of Plastic Optical Fibers

MRS Proceedings, 1989
AbstractPlastic optical fibers (so called POF) are already in wide use in a large number of fields. This paper gives an overview of the field including the advantages of plastic optical fibers, the various types of fibers and the materials in them. Then, the properties of three types of fibers which have recently been developed, are discussed. The first
