Properties of plastic optical fibers
Journal of the Optical Society of America B, 1998Experimental and theoretical studies of the optical properties of large-core step-index plastic optical fibers (POF’s) and graded-index POF’s are reported. A set of criteria and analyses of physical parameters is developed in the context of major issues of POF applications in short-distance communication systems.

A plastic optical fiber tap has been developed. The plastic optical fiber is bent over a small radius, which causes core modes to be converted into cladding modes. These converted high order modes can then be removed from the fiber by attaching refractive-index-adjusted materials.
