Plastic zones in fatigue

Engineering Fracture Mechanics, 1980
Abstract This paper presents a model to evaluate the plastic zone size at the crack tip using mechanical properties of the material and loading conditions (Mode I). The parameter U controlling the effects of residual deformations has been incorporated.

Plasticity of the Axonal Trigger Zone

The Neuroscientist, 2014
The axon initial segment (AIS) is a specialized axonal compartment that is involved in conversion of synaptic potentials into action potentials. Recent studies revealed that structural properties of the AIS, such as length and position relative to the soma, are differentiated in a cell-specific manner and shape signal processing of individual neurons.

An unusual fatigue crack‐tip plastic zone: The epsilon plastic zone of polycarbonate

Journal of Polymer Science: Polymer Physics Edition, 1982
AbstractPolycarbonate exhibits an extraordinary crack‐tip plastic zone under certain fatigue loading conditions. During discontinuous growth (multiple load cycles per crack jump), the plastic zone consists of a leading craze and a pair of sharply delineated shear bands, which together look like the Greek letter epsilon.

Plastic Zone around Circular Holes

Journal of Engineering Mechanics, 2009
In 1946, L. A. Galin proposed an ingenious solution to the problem of analytically determining the plastic region completely surrounding a circular hole in a thin initially elastic plate subject to tensile stress at infinity. The results of Galin’s analysis are recovered by a simple collocation, provided an elliptical elastic-plastic boundary is ...

Experimental determination of plastic zones

Materials Science, 1996
We present four experimental series for the determination of the size and shape of plastic zones due to monotonic and cyclic loadings. Specimens contain notches of various geometries but not cracks. This provides the possibility to study the effect of notch radius and the repetitions of loading without the disturbing influence of crack closure and the ...

Plastic Zone Development Around Nanoindentations

MRS Proceedings, 2000
ABSTRACTJohnson's cavity model relating indenter geometry and deformation resulting from elastic-plastic indentations is appropriate for a wide variety of materials. In the case of nanoindentations in single crystal BCC metals, limitations are reached when creep is not fully accounted for.

Cracks screened by plastic zones

Materials Science and Engineering, 1986
Abstract If dislocations are distributed in a plastic zone around a crack, the strength of the square root singularity of the stresses around the tip is changed, and the stress intensity factors are modified. Since the change in the stress intensity vector must be a linear function of the dislocation density, it is possible to define universal weight

Estimating plastic zone sizes

International Journal of Fracture, 1974

Discrete shear transformation zone plasticity

Extreme Mechanics Letters, 2016
Abstract A method for solving small strain plasticity problems with plastic deformation arising from the evolution of a collection of discrete shear transformation zones (STZs) is presented. The STZs are represented as transforming Eshelby inclusions. At each instant, superposition is used to represent the solution in terms of the Eshelby inclusions,

Plastic zone characterization by recrystallization

Journal of Materials Science Letters, 1987
Description des essais de calibrage qui determinent la correlation entre la grosseur des grains recristallises et la deformation. Ceci necessite l'analyse de la distribution de deformation dans les zones de plasticite a l'extremite de ...
