Optimization of plate girders

Steel Construction, 2014
AbstractThe costs of the self‐weight of a structure have never been a real issue in the design of steel girders, since the material costs of a structural element are mainly determined by labour costs. The booming economies of China and India cause a continuously increasing demand for steel.

Web buckling of tapered plate girders

Proceedings of the Institution of Civil Engineers - Structures and Buildings, 2000
When hot rolled beams (cross-section I and H) show insufficient strength or are not economic for design purposes, plate girders are usually designed, in most cases by welding several plates together. More efficient structural elements can often be achieved by designing these plate girders as tapered plate girders.

Plate Stability Verifications of Aluminium Plate Girders

Key Engineering Materials, 2016
The paper focuses on overall and local web plate buckling of longitudinally multi-stiffened aluminium plate girders subjected to compression, bending, shear and transverse loading. The authors completed wide-range bifurcation stability analysis by energy method.

Torsion of Plate Girders

Transactions of the American Society of Civil Engineers, 1953
ANALYTICAL AND EXPERIMENTAL RESEARCH WAS UNDERTAKEN AT LEHIGH UNIVERSITY, BETHLEHEM, PENNSYLVANIA, TO DETERMINE THE STRESS DISTRIBUTION, STIFFNESS AND STRENGTH OF BOLTED, RIVETED AND WELDED PLATE GIRDERS UNDER UNIFORM TWISTING MOMENT. SEVENTY-TWO TESTS WERE MADE ON FIFTEEN DIFFERENT SPECIMENS.
