The proper diagnosis of patients with immune-mediated thrombocytopenias can be accomplished by using the advances made in the field of platelet serology. These techniques range from solid phase red cell adherence to sequencing platelet antigen amino acids by polymerase chain reaction.

Platelet Antibodies in Thrombocytopenic Patients
British Journal of Haematology, 1977Platelet antibodies either bound to the surface of platelets or free in the serum were sought in patients who had low platelet counts for a variety of reasons. They were detected by finding excess IgG on the surface of washed platelets either directly or after incubation of the serum with normal platelets.

Platelets and Antiphospholipid Antibodies
Lupus, 1996The involvement of platelets in the antiphospholipid syndrome is complex and the full pathogenic significance is not fully understood. The binding of aPL antibodies to the platelet membrane may result in the thrombopenia and further haemostatic activation.

Platelet Migration Inhibition Test for Platelet Antibodies
International Archives of Allergy and Immunology, 1977A simplified methodology and parameters associated with the performance of a platelet migration inhibition test for the detection of antiplatelet-associated antibodies is described.

Anti-platelet Antibody Determination by Platelet Factor 3 Assay
American Journal of Clinical Pathology, 1976Anti-platelet antibody determinations by a recently introduced platelet factor 3 assay (Pf-3 assay) were evaluated in 159 specimens from 95 patients who had low platelet counts. As a standard procedure, the 51Cr lysis test (51Cr test) was used. The 51Cr test and Pf-3 assay had an excellent correlation (results agreed for 80.5% of 159 specimens tested).

The Effect of Antihuman Platelet Antibodies on Human Platelets
Thrombosis and Haemostasis, 1979The influence of an heterologous antihuman platelet serum (AS) was examined an immunological approach to investigate platelet function, as induces aggregation and release from platelets in citrate plasma. Neither thrombin nor complement were requirements, and inhibitors of ADP-(adenosine) and collagen-induced (aspirin) aggregation were only slightly ...

Platelet antibodies in systemic lupus erythematosus
British Journal of Haematology, 1987Summary. In systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), the precise cause of the thrombocytopenia is unknown. Since platelet associated IgG is increased in many patients, it has been suggested that the destruction of platelets might be dependent on specific antibodies. In nine patients with SLE, platelet associated immunoglobulins were found together with free

Platelet antibodies in immune thrombocytopenia
Blood Reviews, 1992Several tests to detect antibodies to platelets in patients with immune thrombocytopenia have been developed over the 40 years since it was first noted that this disorder was mediated by antiplatelet factors. Early tests were crude and not reproducible. A major landmark was the quantitation of IgG immunoglobulin on platelet membrane and the observation

Are Platelet-Antibody Tests Worthwhile?
New England Journal of Medicine, 1987This issue of the Journal contains a report by Lehman et al. on a patient with autoimmune thrombocytopenia and lymphoreticular malignant disease, in whom state-of-the-art in vitro serologic methods...
