Extension of platelet concentrate storage

Transfusion, 1983
Extension of the storage time of platelet concentrates in a satellite bag which is part of a new blood bag system was studied by reinfusing autologous 51Cr‐labeled platelets into normal volunteers, and measuring postinfusion platelet counts and bleeding times in patients requiring platelet transfusions.

Bacterial proliferation in platelet concentrates

Transfusion, 1986
ABSTRACT: Growth curves of bacteria in platelet concentrates were studied to determine whether increasing the shelf‐life of platelets from 3 to 7 days might have contributed to the increased number of deaths caused by contaminated platelets that have been reported to the FDA since 1980.

Chemokines in stored platelet concentrates

Transfusion, 1996
BACKGROUND: Platelets contain several mediators, belonging to a family of proinflammatory cytokines named chemokines, that are stored in the organelles. Release and accumulation of these chemokines during storage of platelet concentrates (PCs) might be responsible for nonhemolytic transfusion reactions.STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Analysis was done of pH ...

Bacterial inactivation of platelet concentrates with the THERAFLEX UV‐Platelets pathogen inactivation system

Transfusion, 2018
The THERAFLEX UV‐Platelets system (Maco Pharma) uses ultraviolet C (UVC) light for pathogen inactivation (PI) of platelet concentrates (PCs) without any additional photoactive compound.

Platelet concentrate effects on thromboelastography

Journal of Cardiothoracic and Vascular Anesthesia, 1997
This study evaluated platelet effects on thromboelastography to determine how morphologically abnormal platelets affected native whole blood analysis.Prospective, controlled comparison.Tertiary care university hospital.Volunteer cardiac surgery patients.Fresh platelets were obtained from volunteers and were either treated normally or cryodisrupted with

Bacteriocidal Properties of Platelet Concentrates

Transfusion, 1974
Platelet concentrates were contaminated with predetermined numbers of bacteria isolated from patients. Staphylococcus epidermidis and Pseudo‐monas aeruginosa organisms were killed if the number introduced was less than 103. when 104 through 106 organisms were added, their growth was depressed for 24 hours and then slowly resumed.

Pathogen inactivation of platelet concentrates

Vox Sanguinis, 2010
Question 1 Has pathogen inactivation of PCs been implemented in your country ⁄ centre? If so, which technique is used? • If so, does this concern all PCs or only PCs for certain groups of patients? • How many inactivated PCs have been transfused and what was the experience with them so far? • Have you noticed any untoward reactions or effects that were,

Effects of high platelet concentration in collecting and freezing dry platelets concentrates

Transfusion and Apheresis Science, 2004
To evaluate, in vitro, the effects of collecting and cryopreserving fresh dry platelet concentrates (PCs).Standard and dry PCs were collected in the same apheresis procedure. PCs were evaluated by mean platelet volume (MPV), pH, glucose and LDH levels.

Platelet serotonin concentration in alcoholic subjects

Life Sciences, 2004
Serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT) is assumed to play a role in the pathophysiology of different psychiatric disorders including alcoholism. Since platelets and central serotonergic synaptosomes share similar pharmacodynamics of 5-HT, this study determined platelet 5-HT concentration in 148 male and 42 female drug-free subjects with alcohol ...
